It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Chin C. Huang PhD on January 12, 2015 at the age of 80. He passed peacefully in his sleep at home with his family after admirably battling progressive complications from long-term liver disease. He was born in 1934 in Chiayi, Taiwan. After graduating from National Taiwan University, he completed his graduate degrees at University of Alberta, Edmonton,AL and University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon,SK.
Upon completion of post-doctoral work at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, he joined Armour Pharmaceutical (now CSL Behring), Kankakee, IL, and became one of their senior manufacturing development scientists. He developed a strong expertise in purifying blood clotting factors and eventually led a team to develop the first product for treating hemophilia patients who lack factor IX clotting proteins. His novel scientific approaches resulted in multiple patents and continue to help patients today. As a director and lead supporting scientist, he spearheaded the expansion of the company toward manufacturing and development for a new patient population - those afflicted with hereditary emphysema who are unable to produce alpha1-antitrypsin inhibitor proteins. Finally approved after his retirement, the drug remains as one of the only 4 treatments approved by the FDA for these patients.
After a sole commitment of 28 years to the same pharmaceutical manufacturing group, he retired with his wife Kay to Seattle area. Within a short time he became a welcomed fixture in the Taiwanese-American church and social community. He was well liked for his kindness, giving nature, loyalty, and soft-spoken approachable humor that made him a confidant and close friend to many. His interests often mirroring those he felt close to, whether it be golfing, matsutake mushroom picking, salt-water fishing, or catering preparations for unknown number of Taiwanese community events. These all had the commonality of spending time with family and friends which is something he truly valued the most. He is survived by his wife-Kay; his son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter - Dennis, Lynn, and Allison; his son-Eugene; his brothers - Chin-Ing and Ping-Yan. As he became known to his extensive and as-close-as-related Seattle family, Ojisan will be missed!
