Daria Alcala Apellanes was born on the island of Bohol, Philippines, in the small town of Loay. Born to Ramon and Pancracia Alcala, she was the eldest of six children.
She graduated from San Antonio High School in Surigao, then returned to Bohol to attend Holy Name College. In 1971, she married Cesar Lim, and gave birth to her first son, Albert. The same year, she also completed her nursing degree. She had a second son, Darwin, in 1974.
She worked as a nurse at ARTIMCO hospital in Cagwait, Surigao Del Sur for 10 years. She decided to avail herself of the early retirement offered by the company to start a family business, a restaurant in Davao City. Her family moved to Cagayan de Oro City to find better living and she was widowed in 1995.
She returned to Bohol in 1995. In 1999, she saw her childhood friend, Ernesto Apellanes, who had been widowed the year before. They began a romance, and Ernesto returned to Bohol in June 2000 to propose. She emigrated to the US in 2001 and married Ernesto.
It was a dream come true to be living and working in the US. They lived in Seattle, and she worked at Foss Home and Village for 20 years until her retirement. Daria was full of life and made friends wherever she went.
There is no perfect marriage, but she lived a happy, memorable, roller coaster life with her husband “Erning” until her last breath when God took her to His paradise.
To her children, she was the strongest, most courageous and determined woman on earth. She loved her grandchildren, and always greeted them with a big smile and a hug. Her love and support to her loved ones, especially her children, will be treasured forever in their hearts.
Daria was preceded in death by her first husband Cesar, her brother Rufo, and her sister Emily.
