He was born in Middletown, the son of Lloyd and Janice (Lucey) Johnson of Portland. Don was a graduate of Portland High School Class of ’77 and later went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in economics from Eastern Connecticut State University and a master’s degree in maritime management from Maine Maritime Academy.
Don’s career as a cruise ship captain gave him the opportunity to share his passion for boating, being on the water and exploring Alaska with his passengers and crew. He currently had been employed by UnCruise Adventures in Seattle. Captain Don was genuine and generous with everyone he met and was there to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it.
He is survived by his parents; his brother, Philip Johnson of New Haven; sister, Diane Bordonaro and her husband, Mark of Portland; nieces, Meghan Pohl (Wolfram), Brittany Bordonaro, and Mallory Bordonaro; grandnephew, Brayden James. He also leaves behind many, many friends in Connecticut, Washington, and Alaska. Don loved spending holidays with his family in Connecticut which he still considered home. He never missed a chance to connect with his family whether on the east coast or the west coast. Uncle Don was always there to celebrate his nieces’ milestones and accomplishments and was looking forward to doing the same with his grandnephew.
