Dwight S. (Bud) Hawley Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 19, 2017. He was born in Seattle on April 11, 1924. A third generation Ballard boy, he graduated from Ballard High School in 1942 and the University of Washington in 1948. He served in the U.S. Armed Forces during WW II. In 1948, he became a member of the Ballard business community working alongside his father Dwight Sr. at Hawley Insurance Company. In 1976, he joined his brother Barry at Hawley Realty as a commercial real estate broker.Dwight served as President of the Ballard Rotary Club and the Ballard Chamber of Commerce. His membership with the Ballard Rotary Club spanned more than 65 years. Along with many other knuckle knockers, Dwight helped raise funds for the Ballard General Hospital built in 1954 and now known as Swedish Ballard. Behind the scenes throughout his life, Dwight was always ready to lend a helping hand and cheer others on to pursue their dreams. Dwight and Helen, his wife and traveling companion of 48 years, realized a dream of their own in 1971 with the purchase of waterfront property on Dabob Bay, an unknown bit of paradise on the Olympic Peninsula. Their rustic cabin built by Dwight became their second home and the family gathering place to stay connected, unwind and celebrate family milestones. Retirement gave Dwight and Helen the opportunity to travel near and far, together and with their children. Family photo albums, with Dwight's beaming smile, tell the story of trips to Australia, Antarctica, Mexico, Canada, Europe, Alaska, the Galapagos Islands and a 9 month road trip crisscrossing the United States in their beloved RV. Dwight's love for his family and friends was deep and unconditional. His life was marked by his infectious enthusiasm and zest for living. He was a wonderful storyteller. He was proud of his Makah heritage through his mother Dorothy, and he loved the Pacific Northwest. It was his playground where well into his 80's he enjoyed hiking, fishing, skiing, golfing and crabbing. He never did give up swimming in Puget Sound.Dwight was an individual, a kid at heart, shaped by his family's values and strongly influenced by his decision to put forth the time and effort to become an Eagle Scout. His entire life was shaped by Scouting values. His family will never forget him and the qualities he exemplified: integrity, loyalty, love, endurance, generosity, optimism, modesty, fairness, kindness. He will be profoundly missed. Thank you Mom, for taking such good care of Dad and inspiring him. Thank you for working alongside Dad to give all of us such a great and happy life.
