Age 79 passed away March 28, 2007, in Kirkland, Washington, after a heroic yearlong battle with Leukemia.
Carolyn is survived by her husband Rollin Hurd and her 4 daughters, Nancy Jim Zombro of Sammamish, Lisa Brian Bate of Kirkland, Laurie Roger Davies of Bellevue, and Jane Dan Krpan of Kenmore, along with 9 grandchildren, Mark Emily Tellvik, Jon Bate, Michael Amy Tellvik, Jeff Davies, Julianne Juan Diaz, Nick Krpan, Mary Bate, Michael Bate and Adam Krpan. She also has 2 great grandchildren, Caden Tellvik, Tristan Tellvik and brother William Mari Ann Cleaver of Fall City.
Carolyn was born in Hoquiam, Washington in 1927 to George and Helen Cleaver. She grew up in Hoquiam where her father owned a women?s clothing store and a cranberry bog in Copalis Washington. She had a wonderful childhood and told us many stories of her adventures. She met Rollin in high school and they married after he returned from his tour in WWII.
They have lived in Kirkland since 1951 where she raised her four daughters and worked in Rollin?s dental practice along with fund raising for Children?s Orthopedic Hospital Seattle Children?s Hospital. Later she worked part time at Hallmark. She loved to ski and had a lot of good times with her ski buddies. The usually annual ski trips to Big Mountain with them were a highlight she looked forward to. Even after a hip replacement she was determined to get back on the slopes and she did. She was a fabulous Christmas cookie baker. No one can come close to the perfection of her pinwheel cookies and we aren?t sure how we will do without them. Carolyn loved flowers and gardening and had many beautiful rhododendrons in her yard. She wanted to see her huge Magnolia tree bloom this year and as she left us for heaven, we think she did. She was a positive force in the lives of all who knew her. Her kindness and interest in others was apparent. Where ever she went she made a friend. Even with her illness, she made the best out of the situation. Her bravery and grace was amazing to us and we have learned much from it. She always said she knew where she was going when she left this world, and we picture her there now, reunited with her Mom and Dad and her little dog Lady. And of course she has gotten that beautiful singing voice, and is singing her heart out in the choir.
A memorial service will be held at Washington Cathedral, 12300 Woodinville-Redmond Road NE, Redmond, WA, on Thursday, April 12th at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials maybe made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or Children?s Hospital in Seattle.
