James Jianshe Gu, 67, of Edmonds, Washington, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026. Born in Huoqiu, Anhui, China on August 21, 1958, James lived a life marked by curiosity, reflection, and deep devotion to his family.
James Jianshe Gu graduated from Fudan University in Shanghai with a master’s degree in World Economics. After moving to the United States in 1990, he continued his education and earned a master’s degree in Information Systems, launching a career as a network engineer. Through intelligence, perseverance, and determination, he successfully transitioned from an economics and management background to becoming a senior network engineer. During his years in the United States, he participated in numerous high-level, multinational network infrastructure projects, using technology to build bridges that connected people around the world.
James was kind, steady, and conscientious. He valued family deeply and cherished friendship. As a devoted husband and father, he provided warmth and stability for his family with strength and care. He loved his work and embraced life wholeheartedly, bringing passion to both his career and his home. With friends, he was gentle, respectful, sincere, and open-hearted, earning the lasting admiration and respect of classmates and friends alike.
James was a beloved husband, father, and a thoughtful observer of the world. Through his writing—most notably his blog 西山夜话—he shared reflections on history, global affairs, travel, and everyday life, offering insight shaped by lived experience and careful thought. His words revealed a mind that was engaged, inquisitive, and always seeking understanding, and they resonated with readers who appreciated his honesty and perspective.
Above all, James cherished his family. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia, and his children Randy, Woody, and Courtney, who will remember him for his wisdom, quiet humor, and steady presence.
A service to celebrate James’s life will be held on February 11 at 1:00 p.m. at Evergreen Washelli. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and reflection.
