Jeanne Marie (Hamstrom) McGrath passed peacefully on October 15, 2020, holding the hand of her beloved husband of 66 years, Michael. Born in Seattle on June 15, 1931, to Florence (Peterson) and Ralph Hamstrom, Jeanne attended local Ballard schools and graduated in 1953 from the University of Washington with a degree in Education. She began teaching, but her work life was interrupted when she met Mike through friends. They were married on May 1, 1954, after eloping to the Hitching Post in Coeur d'Alene, ID. Together, they raised four children, Jeffrey (Saya Moriyasu), Merily (Ronald Portelance), Jill (Richard Gelb), and Megan. Jeanne returned to school, receiving a degree in Library Science. She enjoyed her work as a substitute librarian in Shoreline schools for many years.
Jeanne was creative and loved crafting. She sewed and knit many of her children's clothing. She later enjoyed quilting with friends at First Lutheran Church of Richmond Beach, and making jewelry. Jeanne loved a good party, was a great cook and host, and a lively and loyal companion. In retirement, she and Mike had fun traveling the world together, always returning to their favorite vacation spots, Sunlight Beach, Whidbey Island and Hawaii - until the grandchildren arrived. Jeanne enjoyed spending time with them most of all.
Jeanne is survived by Michael, her children, and her beloved grandchildren, Gailyn, Grace and Allison Portelance, and Tara McGrath and Nicolo Gelb.
Jeanne the Queen has sailed off into the sunset. Her family and all who knew her cherish so many lovely memories of all that she brought to their lives.
