I just thought about Joe tonight, nearly 25 years after he passed.  I did not know of his passing until around 2003.  I had so much fun with him during high school, then lost contact, as we move on.  I was talking to a friend who just got a job at the EDGEWATER Inn in Seattle.  Joe and I went to high school at Shorewood. We worked together at Shakeys Pizza.  I was telling my friend, who just got hired at EDGEWATER Inn, that Joe and I got arrested there after a Beastie Boys concert in 1987.  Mike D leaned over the stage and told Joe and I to go to the EDGEWATER Inn room ### to party.  We went and took stairs, security grabbed us and cops took us to Seattle 
Police headquarters and held us, towed his car and his Mom picked us up.  I haven’t thought about that night for 20 years. I feel blessed to have known him. I know no one is reading this after so many years, but I am feeling kind of close to him as I write this and hope he feels the same. GOD BLESS YOU, JOE.

I remember meeting Joe at Shoreline High School in 1984  while playing on the basketball team together. He was always the most positive caring person on and off the basketball court. He kept the whole team together. He was a good friend and I will never forget him. Until we meet again, your friend, KG

From pulling my pigtails in second grade to watching the superbowl together in high school, my memories of Joe always bring a smile to my face.  Although too shortlived, he lived and loved well.

To Joe's family,

Our first meeting was in Mrs. Springgate's First Grade class at Echo Lake.  Joe was in my daughter Tanya's classes throughout school and graduating together from Shorewood High School.  In remembering Joe - Tamya recalled  Joe's favorite t-shirt in grade school which had a monkey on the front. She said it is funny the things you remember about someone.
One of my outstanding  memories was when Joe and Ted Cornell were T-Ping our yard when they were in high school and my husband ran out to see what was going on. Ted got caught and Joe made it up the rockery and over the 6 foot cyclone fence of Echo Lake with a broken leg.  Ted had to clean it up and I don't think they did that again, at least to our house.
We would see Joe at Costco in the last 10 years and always enjoyed his smile.  We are saddened by Joe's passing and send our thoughts to his family.

The way you connected with so many people inspires me everyday. A true gift!  I will forever remember playing pool, conversations when you lived with Tom.  Laughs, Dave Matthews concert, camping, shrimp eating and just having a good time, it was very easy to do when you where around.  Keep smiling on us... we will know. BC

What a wonderful and contagious spirit!  No wonder the angels wanted you on their team!  Thank you Joe for the smiles and the hugs....you have brought warmth to my heart on more than one occassion and by reading these other notes, you have done the same for countless others! My thoughts and prayers go out to all of Joe's family and friends.  Joe and I went to Einstein and Shorewood together, and he was always a really fun person to be around.  He never failed to make you laugh or smile, or give you a hug.  I only saw Joe a few times after graduation, but even after all that time, he still had a hug for me.  His bright spirit and infectious smile will be terribly missed.

P.S.  Joe, I know that you are in a better place now and I'm sure that you are up there making the angels laugh and smile too!

Every time I hear the name Joe Sankus, I smile!  Joe and I went to Jr. High and High School together.  There were times I spent out in the hall, because Joe and I would get caught goofing off etc...  I haven't seen Joe for so many years, and I was so saddened to hear of his illness and passing.  Joe will be greatly missed by all those who had the privilage to know him.  My thoughts and prayers are with all the family and friends who grieve for this great guy.  I pray that you all will find comfort in knowing that Joe is in a better place now, where there is no pain, just smiles and laughter.  I will never forget what an impact Joe had on so many people. I first met Joe in Kindergarden and our friendship grew from there. I'll never foget the 1st grade talent show and all the years of soccer together. Every time we ran into each other our relationship continued from where it left off. Joe was a great man.

I first met Joe at the age of 11 when I was the Scoutmaster of Troop 324.  Joe was well mannered, thoughtful, kind, and loved learning.

I enjoyed seeing Joe working at Costco.  We talked and laughed often.

I met Joe almost three years ago when I met Michael Mitchell, his good friend.  Joe had such a zest for life and he brightened up the room.  He always had a smile for everyone.  I will always remember having about an hour and a half conversation with Joe on the phone a few months back when he was talking about his angels who were watching out for him. We talked about God and Jesus and I was so happy to know that Joe had faith in God and his angels - even though he couldn't understand why this was happening to him.  I will always cherish that conversation.   I will also always remember the smile he gave me a week before he passed away in in the hospital as Mike and I were leaving.  He turned and gave me a great big smile and waved at me.  I will forever miss Joe and he is always in my prayers.  If God needed someone extra special to add to heaven, , he certainly found it in Joe 

It has been many years since we last ran in to each other, but Thank you Joe...for always picking up right where we left off.  Whether it was Jr. High, High School, or later, you always shared your friendship without judgement. You have left a lasting memory of a kind spirit, and a happy smile. We were so very sorry to hear of Joey's passing. Ray & I will always remember this tall lanky kid always with a smile on his face. Taking him on vacations & his bottomless pit stomach. We remember taking him to the Elks Club for dinner one time & asking "Joey, do you want the buffet line or to order from the menu?", he replied, "I think I'll have both!".  I remember coming home from work one time to find two big sixth graders fully clothed sitting in Seth's small swimming pool! I will so miss my Costco hugs!  If I saw Joey checking, I would always, holler "Hi, Joey", He would always, always excuse himself from his customer, run over & give me a huge bear hug. God bless you Joe, give everybody you meet up there those terrific hugs of yours!

Family, know that the next beautiful sunset you see or pastoral rays of sun coming through the clouds are a signal from Joey telling you he's now experiencing a beautiful new place he wants to share with all of you.

I met Joe 5 years ago through my boyfriend Mike McKeon.  The first night I met him, he gave me a huge hug.  What a sweetie pie. We certainly had some fun times at the 7706 house in Greenlake and later when he lived in Shilshole.   I can't express how much we will miss his visits to our house to play video games with Mike, his jokes and storys, and especially all those great hugs.  That darling guy is with the angels now.

It seems like I have known Joe forever. I have many fond memories of Joe. From our times together in Cub Scouts to being teamates on the Mighty Mites/Volcanos soccer team.  I can also remember piling into my parents car and going to rollerskating parties at the Lynwood Roller Rink as kids.  We used to call my parents car the Taxi Cab because we had so many friends to pick up and take home.

However, the fondest memories I have of Joe is his smile, his laughter, and most of all his friendship.

Over the years, we had lost touch with one another which happens in life more often than it should. However, I always have and always will consider Joe to be my friend.

I am so saddened to hear of Joe's passing.  When I think of Joe, the first thing I do is smile....he just had that way about him, that you couldn't help yourself.  Joe and I met at Einstein Middle School and became fast friends. I have pictures of him and Eric and Tim in their Mr. Rags sweatshirts from 7th grade. I remember getting into all kinds of mischief with those boys!!  Joe made everything light-hearted and fun.  I only saw him a handful of times since we graduated from Shorewood, but it was always great to see him.  He always gave me a big smile and a warm hug and I feel lucky that in my lifetime I called Joe Sankus my friend.  My warmest thoughts go out to his family and loved ones.  He will be missed by all who knew him.

   The more than 20 years I've known you wasn't nearly long enough.  You don't know how bad I wanted to hang out with you guys up in the treehouse when I was little.  At least by World Expo-Canada, I was able to tag along, but my mullet was never long enough to reach "cool" status.  Whether road tripping to California or searching for senoritas downtown, you always made the times memorable.  Did we really have to kiss underneath the missletoe at Kelly and Monica's apartment?  Oh yeah, shh.  You will be missed - for the laughter, positiveness, and especially the love.

I met Joe through his brother Dave. What a wonderful person.He always had time to talk,share a joke or catch up on what I'd been up to lately.Talking with friends today we all remember and marveled about how happy he always was to see us. I worked with Joe at Aurora. He was a fun and energetic person to be around. He always had a smile and would be able to brighten up a our work enviorment. He will be missed. 

I met Joe when I was brand new to Costco 10 years ago.  As a caller back then it was always such a joy to work with Joe - he was so kind to all the members as well as the people he worked with. I never got the opportunity to meet joe but I have heard so many wonderful things about this person from his co-workers. I just wanted you to know that in his lifetime he has touched so many people. I work with several people at the corporate office who knew joe and have said wonderful things about him. This makes me believe that if I did meet him that I too would be saying the same thing. I lost my grandmother last march from breast cancer. She had a 13 year battle and fought hard till the end. I miss her everyday and wish that in my life when I am faced with hardship that I too will fight like she did. Joe I am sure will meet my grandma jean in heavan. They will be our little angels looking down on us to make sure that we are doing ok. 

Joe always had a kind word and a hug for me, his awesome attitude about everything was very infectious. I am so grateful that we were able to be on this planet at the same time. He will always have a special place in my heart and will be missed terribly.

I just wanted to add what a great idea it was to hand out packets of Forget- Me- Nots at Joe's funeral.  Not that it will be possible to ever forget Joe, those flowers have made me smile and think of him everyday when I walk outside!  I will always have a constant reminder of him.
