Katie was a devoted wife and mother, a woman of strong faith, and a consummate hostess and cook. Those who knew her will remember her warm smile, humor, and her style that spanned the breadth of her personality, from kicky and fun to elegant and demure. She peacefully passed with her daughters by her side after a well-lived life.
Born on November 1, 1934, in Portland, Oregon to George and Olga Polechrones who were refugees from Palatia, Marmara in Turkey. They immigrated from Thessaloniki, Greece in the early 1920s. Katie grew up in Portland Oregon with her older siblings, Nick Polechrones and Penny (Polechrones) Paras who were integral in creating a stable and happy life for her and her mom after their father died in 1945. The siblings enjoyed a close life-long relationship, despite living in different cities.
Katie was the first in her family to attend college graduating from Lewis and Clark College in 1956 with a degree in Education. She worked as a 2nd grade teacher in the Portland and Seattle areas.
At 24 she took her first international voyage to Athens to visit her sister’s family. It was during this trip that she met her future husband, a charismatic Artie Delimitros from Seattle who was on leave from the Navy at the time. They met again the following year at a wedding. Sparks flew, and they married in 1960. He was the love of her life and were true partners throughout their marriage.
Katie’s three children (Diana, Dino & Athena) were born in less than three years. She loved packing her kids and friends in her station wagon to go to the beach or other spontaneous adventures. Even as Artie’s job moved the family to Phoenix then to San Diego, they created comfortable and loving homes filled with music and culture. With an “open-door” policy, their home was social hub often filled with their kid’s friends, and visiting friends and family.
Every summer after 1974, Katie packed the family up to spend time in Seattle and Portland keeping the family entrenched in their home communities.
Katie loved brisk beach walks and swims. Artie and Katie enjoyed Husky football games and travelling to include Europe and Business trips. She passed on a legacy of entertaining by hosting lively dinner parties, huge holiday gatherings and celebrations. She even planned and catered a memorable big fat Greek wedding for her son, Dino and his wife, Jodie. The memories these events created are still the talk among friends and family.
At 58, Katie lost her beloved husband Artie which was a devastating blow to the entire family. Katie still found joy in life and hopped between Seattle, Hood Canal, and San Diego to spend time with family and friends. She enjoyed tours with friends and family through Europe, the Holy Land and even a solo trip to Russia!
Family was everything to Katie and that was her focus in her later years. Katie was an indulging Yiayia to her seven grandchildren. They loved Yiayia’s special spoons of honey and secret trips for ice cream while blasting the likes of Andrea Bocelli on her car stereo. She joined family road trips, camping trips, attended school events, and was a strong loving support to her children and grandchildren in times of need.
All this love and care was returned to her when she began her journey with dementia. Katie was integrated fully into her children’s families. She lived with Diana's family for 15 years and Athena included Katie in all her family vacations and handled all her business affairs. When it became necessary, Katie moved to assisted living. At Aegis on Madison, her home for the last nine years of her life, Katie kept her sense of core personality and was truly adored by the staff for her charm, sweet smile, playful dancing with her walker, and flirty sense of humor.
Katie is survived by her three children, Diana (Peter) Argeres, Dino (Jodie) Delimitros, and Athena (George) Sarantinos, her grandchildren, Artie, George, Evan, Sofia, Chris (Shelby), Luke, and Paulette, and her great granddaughter, Daisy Delimitros.
We will miss her creative and lively spirit. May her Memory Be Eternal.
