I’m 27 now and I still have core memories of staying at my grandmothers house so she could babysit when I was a child. My brother and I would go over and just hangout while she cared for us. I remember watching all of her Mr. Bean tapes that she for some reason collected, and found them absolutely hysterical. I remember the weird candy on the coffee table that looked like it was there forever. I remember playing in the yard in her beautiful garden. I remember playing with my late grandfathers old carpenter tools. So much exploring and I’m happy to have had a safe environment like that to grow up in. I’m lucky to have had her in my life for so long and I’m thankful you got to see me grow up.

My favorite memory with my grandmother is when my brother Winston and I were young, we often stayed with Pa Pa  and Gong Gong (Grandma/Grandpa) at their home in West Seattle. I remember Pa Pa would make my favorite dish “See Yow Dan” (Soy sauce egg) and let me watch my favorite show: a cartoon in Chinese called “Ham Bo Bow” which is about a Hamburger Boy. 
 
My other favorite memory is having Christmas dinner with the family at Auntie Tina’s house. The picture of PaPa myself and Mom (Diane) is from Christmas Dinner a few years ago. 

We will always love and miss you, PaPa ❤️

Mom, you've been an inspiration to me in many many ways.  An illiteracy, spirited, mentally tough woman that had overcome countless situations that dealt to your life. Your perseverance attitude and love for others has left us with long last impressions. Greatly appreciated! 

I am blessed to be your son. I am blessed to be in part of your path for many years. Especially the last few. We were able to spend more time to enjoy playing your favorite mahjong game together. We shared many laughs and stories. Those were some priceless moments we had, and I cherished them.

Mom, you've showcased the toughness in you one night that I would never forget. It was the night when you had to climb 8 floors of stairs to reach home due to elevator malfunction. You were over 100 years old and weren't in your best physical condition. Your determination and never give up attitude were astoundingly admired. Yes, you were beat (so was I) but you've made it on your own. SALUTE AND RESPECT!

Until we meet again. Mom. Please forgive me for any shortcomings that I may have caused and thank you so much for all the life reminders, the traditional cookings and all the unconditional love you've given me.

4) Cooking – Mother had incredible skills to prepare foods daily that I enjoyed.  Mother made specialty foods for weekends, holidays, Chinese year end and New Year.  In Vietnam, she often invited an aunt to prepare foods for family gatherings.  It was quite the treat for us.  I learned a lot from Mother’s cooking.  I believe cooking will contribute to an healthy life and recommend everyone to take a cooking course when possible.

In closing, I would like to borrow a poem (author unknown) to remember my mother:

          “To one who bears the sweetest name.
            And adds luster to the same,
            Long life to her, for there’s no other,
            To take the place of my dear mother.”

2) Health – Mother lived a long life, but I can’t recall a time when mother was suffering from any illness.  Mother knew how to cook and eat to maintain a strong body and raised seven healthy children.  Mother had arthritis that deformed her fingers, but luckily, she told us that her arthritis caused no pain for her.  Mother routinely exercised for an hour every morning while she lived by herself. Mother kept a healthy life style even able to travel during her nineties.

3) Money – Mother always kept saving money in mind, save first then spend only when needed. Mother once mentioned that there were times when paying for our school tuitions became very difficult, because a large sum of money needed to pay before school starting, mother had to loan some money from friends or relatives to pay our tuitions, then worked hard to pay back what she loaned.  Mother treated us fairly and supported whoever needed helps.  Later in life, mother lived happily and independently with some helps from her nearby kids.  Mother had no debts and achieved so called “financial independent”.

Dear Mother, 

The woman I respect the most.  Mother taught me a lot of useful lessons throughout my life.  I would like to share a few of them which I learned as follows:

1) Wholesomeness and Unity – Life is much, much tougher in South Vietnam than in a rich country likes the United States.  Growing up during the war time in China, mother did not get an opportunity to go school.  However, she realized education is the most important key to have better life for us.  Mother always managed to provide foods, cloths, and tuitions for us to go school.  Mother understood how to live her life to the fullest and always genuinely accepted the given conditions to survive the difficult times.  Mother was patient, kind, thrifty, never complained, hated lies and gambling.  As a typical day when we were growing up, mother woke up early in the morning, cooked breakfast by using a wood fire stove (not an easy task) for all of us, then prepared us to go school.  Mother would wash all our clothes by hands (a difficult task) every morning, hung the clothes outdoor for them to dry.  Mother went to the market daily to get vegetables, fruits, and meats for preparing our lunch and dinner.  Afternoon, beside to keep the house clean, mother may need to sew, fix, or iron our clothes to keep us neat.  During tougher times, mother would work a day shift or an evening shift when available in an herbal medicine factory, she would do the household chores at night.  Overall, mother always loved us by trying to keep the family together and living happily.

Dear Grandma,

Grandma was a strong and caring woman, always thinking about others and putting family first.  When I was younger, we would stay at grandma's house while my family visited Seattle.  She would take such good care of us and make sure we were always comfortable.  Despite the language barrier, I could still feel that she cared about me, and I loved seeing her kind smile.  A memory that stands out is that she changed one of her traditional recipes to remove an ingredient that I'm allergic to so I could enjoy the dish too.  She was very thoughtful, and I experienced the extended family always coming together around her.  

As I grew older and busier, I visited less and less, but every time I heard that grandma had on display all of the photos I sent her each year, it would make me feel a little warm inside. 

Grandma will be remembered and missed by many.  May she rest in eternal peace.

Dear Mother-in-Law,

I grieve for your passing.

You were such a healthy and resilient person, I thought you would stay with us much longer.

You were not only physically strong, but you were also mentally very strong.

When you thought it was necessary to endure, you did so with firm resolve and stoic patience. 

When it seemed like someone needed support, you were always there to help as much as you could.

I will never forget your smile, full of kindness and true STRENGTH.

I pray that your soul may rest in peace.

My mom was born in Guangdong, China.  She grew up without any chance to go school because she was a girl.  Even without any school educations, couldn’t read and write in any languages, yet she was a smart, strong, independent, and hard working person I have ever seem.  With those characters, she could overcome any difficulties in her life.  She never wastes foods, materials, and money even she had plenty of them.  She loved her family dearly and kind to anyone she knew.  

Mom, you seem always know what to do next and made right decisions in your life, even in the hardest last few days of your life.  I never imaged you were so brave, strong, and decisive to fact it.  You taught me a big lesson.  Mom, I admire you, I adore you, I thank you, I miss you forever!

You were a precious gift from God, so much beauty, grace, strength, love and patience.

Thank you for always being so accepting and made me really feel like part of the family.

Farewell, dear mother-in-law. You were, and always will be, a cherished part of my life, a guiding light in my journey, and a beautiful soul. 

Find eternal peace, boundless joy, and the sweetest rest in the realms beyond. You will be missed, but never forgotten.

Life,  is an adventure for her;  with no School,  no formal education, and no training.  She had learn as she live.  She went through war time after war time.
From main land Civil wars in China, Japanese invasion, then Vietnam war.  She was refugee over and all over again.

But what she have was you;  Her Parent, her older sisters, her brothers, her relative, her children and grandchildren.  
She also have her own culture while grown up in her family:   A Chinese girl way of life in family in  early 19 century;  A hard working way of life.
She also have a believe;  Never give up on relationship.  Be kind and blessing.
She also have Ha. her 6th child and 7th child Don.  whose willing to care for her closely in old age.
