Larry Dean Rains passed from this life on February 13, 2002, surrounded by family at his home in Seattle, Washington. Larry was born October 3, 1942, in LaGrande, Oregon, and was raised in Roseburg, Oregon. Following a brief stint in the U.S. Army Reserves, Larry began working for IBM, which sent him to a fateful training conference where he met the woman who would become Karen Rains and her 2-year-old daughter Dawn. After a whirlwind romance that never really ended, Larry and Karen were married on October 3, 1972, and settled in Fargo, North Dakota. Not too much later, Christopher came along in April 1974. The whole bunch of them relocated to Seattle in July 1975?since Karen couldn?t keep him quiet about how much he missed Tillamook cheese and decent sourdough bread?not to mention the water and boats he so dearly loved.
Larry enjoyed a long, successful career as a restaurant manager before realizing his lifelong dream of owning a restaurant?Seattle landmark restaurant Beth?s Caf?. The disease proved catching, as he talked Karen into more restaurants. They went on to own and operate not only Beth?s, but the Hurricane Caf?, Beth?s Caf? at Bothell Landing, and the Duck Island Saloon. Always ready with a joke or a word of encouragement or to give someone a hard time!, Larry will be remembered for his love and respect for his family?and his chosen family of friends, colleagues, crew, and regulars. Larry will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his wife and best friend Karen Rains; children Dawn Rains and her partner Heather Laird, and Christopher Rains and his wife Stacey Rains; brother Reverend Robert and Jeanne Rains; dear friends Lee and Lorna Whiteside; and many friends and extended family.
