Mike Sinkula, 47, of Burien, Washington passed away in his home on September 27, 2017. Mike was born to Martha (Cromwell) Sinkula and Arthur Sinkula on August 12, 1970 in Libertyville, Illinois. He grew up in Southern California and earned his BA in Communication Design from California State University at Chico in 1993. Shortly after, Mike relocated to Seattle to work in its booming graphic design industry, and later founded his graphic design company Premium Design Works. Mike found himself learning web design and development along the way, and in late 2001 Mike was offered a web design instructor position at Seattle Central College, where he discovered his gift for teaching and mentoring others. He met his wife, Karin, in 2004, and together they adopted a sweet pit bull in 2005, bought a little pink house in 2006, and were married by Elvis in 2007. The birth of his two beautiful sons in 2010 and 2014 completed Mike's loving family. In 2014, he earned his Master’s Degree in Human Centered Design & Engineering at the University of Washington, receiving the Graduate Award for Leadership and Excellence. In late 2015, Mike accepted the position of full time web design instructor at Seattle Central College, where he continued to flourish as an instructor, mentor, and friend to his many students.
Mike was a talented and passionate musician, and he spent many years performing, writing, and recording music. He played in many bands over the years, most recently his own band Spain Spivak as lead vocalist and guitarist, and 13th Grade as drummer "Coach". He loved recording in his home studio, and sharing his love of rock with his friends and family.
Mike was a self-described professional 12-year-old, and he felt fortunate to make a living doing what he enjoyed - web design, teaching, and making music. He loved animals, especially his beloved pets who went before him - Chico, Buddy, Spain Spivak, and Razzle. He was a loyal and loving friend, husband, and father.
Mike is survived by his wife, Karin (Engman) Sinkula, his two children, August and Leonardo, his pit bull Summer, and his cat Sissy.
Mike's memorial will take place at Yarrington's/White Center Funeral Home on Saturday October 14, 2017 at 11:00 am. Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Seattle Animal Shelter or another animal rescue organization.
