

Penny was born on June 17, 1943, in Seattle, Washington, to Glen and Dorothy (Granstrom) Middleton. She graduated from Issaquah High School in Issaquah, Washington, in 1962, and continued her education from 1963 to 1965 at Highline Community College in Des Moines, Washington. Penny received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in History in 1968 and her Master’s Degree in Librarianship in 1971 from the University of Washington in Seattle. She successfully received her certification in Basic Medical Terminology from the Children’s Orthopedic Hospital in Seattle in 1973.
Penny worked for several years as a file clerk for the Internal Revenue Service in Seattle.
Penny had a passion for books and was an avid reader. She loved animals, especially horses. In 1959, the family relocated from Seattle to Issaquah so that Penny could have the horse that she had always dreamed of. A horse named “33” was found and purchased. Penny loved and rode “33” for many years. “33” returned her kindness with gentle rides.
Penny was an inspiration to all who knew her. Her smile and sense of humor were contagious. She was known for her kind and compassionate spirit.
Penny was preceded in death by her father, Glen, and her mother, Dorothy. She is survived by her sister, Nancy (Middleton) Reade, her husband, Eugene Reade, and their children, James and Kelly; her brother, James Middleton, his wife Coleen (Fayden) Middleton, and their children, Jennifer and Kyle, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Penny will be laid to rest at Evergreen Washelli Cemetery in Seattle. A Celebration of Life will be planned for the summer of 2026. Date, place and time to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to a favorite charity may be made in honor of Penny.
