Please accept my sincerest condolences on the loss of your beloved Ralph. I pray you will find comfort in the promises from our Creator when he stated, 'Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out (John 5:28,29). This is a guarantee that soon we will be with our loved ones in the resurrection.

I worked with Ralph at my Dad's Car lot, Howard's Used Cars.  I know it was not easy for him to have me come to work there, being the owner's daughter, but Ralph handled it with honor and he was very helpful and kind to me.  We had a lot of fun, playing cards and chatting and eating lunch together.  He was just the best!!!  I remember his sister's from Idaho bringing his mom down to the car lot to visit.  I met his sons and the step-children he had with Shirley and we talked a lot about each of them.  I was proud to call him "friend".  My dad, Howard Mathisen, does not have access to the internet,so I thought I would share with you that he said that Ralph was a wonderful person and a very trusted employee.  We will truely miss him.

You were a great friend to Tony & Me, Iwill miss seeing your smiling face, everytime we visited "Howards Used Cars." Rest in peace good friend.

Ralph was a dedicated Elk and I was honored to know him as a brother.

Ralph was a great father and grandfather
to all of his children and grandchildren.  He always willing to help whenever he can.

We reget that we were unable to attend the Service. We remember Ralph as such a friendly and happy man. He was a devoted Elk member.Can recall many golf outings with Elks golf group that included Ralph. He will truly be missed.

Uncle Ralph was a wonderful man. He will be greatly missed. We loved him alot.

Ralph has been my brother for 73 years and my son's nephew for 42. In all this time he was the kindest, gentlest and most loving person that we've ever known. We are so thankful that for the last 12 years he has had his beloved Laurel. During these years, there was a special bond that showed by his obvious happiness and love of life. We know that he is in Heaven waiting for her to join him there. We love you, miss you and will never ever forget you.

I've been blessed to have known Uncle Ralph for about 12 years.  I met him when I was a teenager in high school and have been very fortunate to spend some very special occassions with him, including both of our weddings.  He was always so happy and we loved his visits.  He made everyone feel so important and so loved.  We will miss him so much!

I feel especially blessed to have been a small part of Uncle Ralph's life on this earth.  When I was 19 years old, his oldest son and my cousin, Bob, whom I was very close to, was killed in an accident.  Though he was heartbroken, he called to see if I was okay.  He was so unselfish and thoughtful and loved very, very much by so many.  Laurel and he always seemed so happy and in love. It's wonderful to have someone that you think so much of, as a part of your everyday life.  My love and prayers to all of the family, and just know that he is watching and waiting for all of us in heaven.  I love you Uncle Ralph!  Keep smiling.

I asked Grand-Dad once what BPOE stood for.  He responded proudly: Benevolent Protective Order of Elks.  He annunciated the PROTECTIVE but I didn't give it a second thought at the time.

He was dressed in his casket, appropriately enough, in a dashing blazer adorned with the insignias of the Elks commemorating his years of service to the lodge and his times as Exaulted Ruler.

Above his left shoulder, I placed a yeoman rating badge from the U.S. Navy, signifying Grand-Dad's service to his country during World War II. 

Above his right shoulder was a shoulder patch from the Seattle Police Department, from which he proudly retired.  SPD is also an acronym used by the Seattle Police Department for Service, PRIDE and Dedication.

Grand-Dad, you're in a perfect position now to continue to watch over us and keep us PROTECTED; and, because I know you never had a feeling to the contrary, continue to show how PROUD you are of us with your trademark smile.

We'll miss you, Grand-Dad.

Lord, as a personal favor, every once in a while, when Grand-Dad just can't contain himself any longer...go ahead and let him have the microphone.

Ralph was such a sincere & dedicated person. We will miss his presence in the R.V. Club & Elks functions, Laurel, I'm sure you had some special years with Ralph, our sympathy, God Bless You
