Richard Owen McElvain

Richard Owen McElvain, age 84, passed away on May 23, 2024. In passing Richard joins his parents, Delbert and Margaret McElvain, and his sister, Randee Omtvedt.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Wendy (husband Christopher) Whitmer; sister, Janet (husband Walter) Wielbicki; extended family and friends.

Born in Seattle on November 10, 1939, Richard grew up in West Seattle. Aside from his time in the Navy, 1961 - 1966, Richard was a lifelong resident of the Seattle area. Richard enjoyed the outdoors and took advantage of the wonderful hiking, climbing canoeing and backpacking adventures the Pacific Northwest offers. Richard climbed Mt. Rainier twice and visited many other shorter peaks and parks on extended backpacking trips, day hikes and climbs.

Sailing became a favorite pastime in the late 70’s early 80’s. Many summers were enjoyed with family sailing the Salish Sea, visiting the Canadian Gulf Islands and destinations beyond. Richard was happiest when exploring the outdoors.

Family and friends will gather for a private Inurnment at Washelli Cemetery on Saturday, June 29th at 11:00 am. A Celebration of Life will follow in Bothell.
