Ron was born 75 years ago on Monday November 25, 1946, in Denver, Colorado. He was the son of the late Opal Mae and Walter Flynn. Ron grew up in Denver, Colorado with two siblings – Wanda E. Flynn Roberts and Pamela Flynn.
Growing up in Denver, Ron’s mother desired a better future for her son and moved him to Seattle, WA to live with his beloved uncle. In Seattle he attended high school at Nathan Hale and later completed college at the University of Puget Sound where he received his bachelor’s degree in business administration.
Ron will be remembered as an inquisitive, hardworking, and principled man committed to family and community. His childhood friends nicknamed him “Skeets”, because the size of his and feet and hands reminded them of snow (skis). He was affectionally known as “Papa” from his grandchildren and “Honey” from his beautiful wife. Ron was passionately proud of his children and grandchildren’s life accomplishments. Ron was an avid golfer, fisherman, experienced martial artist, gardener and a passionate reader of the Bible and many empowerment books. He also loved to dance and make his special honey rolls from his special family recipe.
For over 40 years, Ron was a dedicated realtor serving the Central District of Seattle. Much of his work focused on fighting gentrification and preserving the culture of Seattle’s historically black neighborhoods. Ron was sought after by many long-established Seattle residents for education on the importance of homebuying and its significance to generational wealth building.
Ron was a faithful member of First African Methodist Episcopal Church (F.A.M.E) for over 40 years and received many awards and accolades for his exemplary commitment to public service. Since joining in 1983, he served the Lord and his church in many capacities. He was an Audio Engineer, dedicated member of the Ellis H. Casson choir, Transportation Driver for all church services and functions. , and held the role as President of the Richard Allen Brotherhood for multiple years. Additionally, Ron also worked as a Facilities Manager for the MLK First A.M.E Community Center, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting social, cultural, economic and community service for Seattle area residents of all ages, races, cultures. For many years, Ron and his wife co-hosted a Thanksgiving dinner, which he warmly recognized as the “The Family Affair” to blend many families together in fellowship for the holiday season.
While serving at First A.M.E, Ron was President of the FAME Housing Association. In this role he led First A.M.E. Housing Association in providing affordable housing to low-income individuals, families, and senior citizens in Seattle's historic Central District.
Ron also coached baseball for over a decade for the Seattle International Baseball League (S.I.B.L). SIBL was a non-profit youth baseball organization dedicated to serving the community in the Seattle metro area. Through baseball “Coach Ron” was recognized by many former players as a mentor, confidant, father figure and an example of positive black male leadership.
Ron is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 41 years, Mary Lou Flynn. Daughters – Tamel “Tammy” K. Givens, Charlisse “Charly” Hammon; Son - LuRon Flynn; Grandchildren – Jalise Hammon, Tameka Hammon, Michael Givens, Marquise Givens, Ashanti Hernandez, Jonathan Hammon; Great Grandchildren – Emmanuel “EJ” Overall, Aaliyah “YaYa” Givens, Thaddieus Hammon; and a host of extended relatives from the Flynn, Booker, Braxton and Hammon Families.
Ronald L. Flynn will always be remembered as a devoted husband, father, mentor, and a positive member of his community and a faithful servant of God! Ron was a warrior and fought a tough battle. Everyone who knew him loved him and will always carry his memory in their hearts.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Ronald will be held Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at 2:00 PM at Evergreen Washelli Funeral Home, 11111 Aurora Ave N, Seattle. Repass to follow at, MLK F.A.M.E. Community Center, 3201 E Republican St., Seattle.
