Scott spent his childhood in Edmonds, growing up with two big brothers, Greg and Steve, and a younger sister, Kristie in a great family neighborhood where he made lifelong friends and memories. His passion at that time was baseball and he was the catcher on his Little League all-star team, which succeeded in making it to the state championship tournament.
At age 14, Scott’s family moved to Mill Creek where his lifetime love of golf began. He attended Cascade High School in Everett, playing on the school golf team, and graduated in 1980.
After trying college for a year, he decided that he was a businessman at heart and wanted to be a grocer like his dad. So, he worked hard in the family business and saved his money and at age 21 he joined his two brothers in buying Ken’s Market on Queen Anne hill. He was the meat and deli department manager there for 4 years. In 1988, they bought the Greenwood Ken’s Market and brother-in-law Bill Stamey joined their partnership. They bought their 3rd store, Marketime Foods in 2001. In 2007, they sold the Queen Anne store to Scott’s nephew, Eric and his partners.
Scott and his wife Maurine (Miller) were married in 1990 and were the proud parents of two wonderful children, Derek and Lucy. Scott took great pleasure in being a dad, coaching and cheering on Derek’s baseball teams, which took them to many fields across the state and country. He also coached Lucy’s basketball team and rarely missed one of her soccer games, her favorite sport. He enjoyed taking them on vacations to the family condo at Lake Chelan, touring and tubing the lake by boat, and trips to California and Hawaii. He always tried finding time to “be there” for them despite working long hours at the store.
An avid and proficient golfer, Scott spent most of his free time on the course. He was a member of the Harbor Pointe Men's Club for many years and recently joined the Everett Golf and Country Club. The putting green he had built into his backyard helped keep his short game sharp. He played many courses across the state and twice went to Europe with friends on golfing vacations, playing at several well-known courses including St. Andrews, and went to Augusta, Georgia to watch the Masters Tournament in 2018. He loved his Mariners and hardly ever missed watching their games. He always said “they’re working on year 20 of a 2-year rebuild plan”.
Scott was a self-taught (via the internet) piano player and was pretty darn good at it. He loved playing Billy Joel and Elton John tunes and enjoyed singing at karaoke parties. He was a voracious reader and an idea man, always eager to learn new business strategies and top business practices. He would “tour” new stores, always looking for fresh ideas. He really loved gardening when he could find time and had a beautiful flower filled yard to show for it.
He was fun-loving, outgoing, had a smile for everyone, enthusiastic, very determined, generous, curious, hard-working with endless energy. He will be greatly missed by his large family, many friends, and innumerable business associates and employees.
Scott is survived by his wife Maurine, son Derek, mother Sally, brothers Greg (Gail) and Steve (Mary), sister Kristie (Bill) and many nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his daughter Lucy and his father Ken.
A memorial service in Scott’s honor will be held at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church on February 4th at 2:00 pm. There will be light refreshments and an open mic set up for anyone who would like to say a few words or share memories of Scott.
