Catherine was born in Sivells Bend, Texas and is the daughter William Roscoe and Malvina Cornelia Bowles Jackson. Graduating from high school a year early, she entered North Texas State Teachers College in Denton, Texas in September 1929 and, at the age of only 19, obtained a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry on August 27, 1931. After living for a short time in Los Angeles, California, she returned to Texas, where, on February 25, 1950 in Dallas, she married Joseph Sidney Moss. Catherine appreciated beauty in all its forms and engaged in numerous activities related to music and fine art as well as domestic activities such as sewing. From 1957 through 1963, while working as a medical secretary, then teaching elementary school in Houston, Texas, she attended the University of Houston. On August 24, 1963, she was awarded a Master of Special Education, qualifying her to teach in the Houston Independent School District?s Regional Day School Program for the Deaf, from which she retired. In 1992 she moved to Shoreline, Washington to be nearer her daughter. Catherine truly cared about her pupils, made new friends readily and was always especially pretty when she smiled.
Preceded in death by her brothers and sisters Judson George, Annie Inez, Margaret Virginia and Robert Lee Jackson, Catherine is survived by her daughter Sandra Jo Moss of Seattle, Washington, who loves and misses her terribly and is very fortunate to have such an accomplished, beautiful, intelligent and charming mother.
On Tuesday, November 13, 2001, after viewing from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon at Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Home, 11111 Aurora Ave. N., Seattle, WA 98133, the funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. the same day at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 11002 Greenwood Ave. N., Seattle, Washington 98133.
A graveside service and the interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Gainsville, Texas.
Her daughter requests that memorial gifts designated for the Catherine Jackson Moss Scholarship Fund be made to Gallaudet University, 800 Florida Avenue N.E., Washington, D.C. 20002.
