Joseph “Nick” was born Wednesday, May 2, 1928 in Zephyrhills, Florida to Joseph Henry and Ada (Stevens) Nickerson. Nick grew up in Massachusetts. He entered the US Air Force in May of 1946 at the age of 18 and went through boot camp at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. On June 22, 1949 Nick married Evelyn C. Watkins in San Antonio. Together they raised their family as his military career took them to far away destinations. Nick retired from the Air Force in 1968 as a Master Sergeant after serving for over 21 years. While in the Air Force, Nick served as a photographer and film processor, skills he employed as he went to work for Perkin-Elmer in Connecticut, then to NASA where he developed the first pictures of the Moon and of Mars from a manned spacecraft during the Gemini missions and then to Technicolor. He worked professionally with film for over 40 years. Nick, not being a person who liked to sit around, later went to work at Gibson’s in Seguin and then at the sporting goods counter at the first Walmart in Seguin. On January 24, 1984, his loving wife Evelyn passed away after 34 years of marriage. On August 23, 1986 Nick married Elizabeth Marrou at Saint James Catholic Church in Seguin. Together they enjoyed almost 28 years together as husband and wife. Nick was a very talented photographer; he loved gardening, traveling, drawing, fishing, camping playing the harmonica, barbequing, hunting and birdwatching. When he was happy he would often be found whistling bird calls.
Joseph was preceded in death by his first wife Evelyn C. Nickerson, his brother Arthur Austin Nickerson and his sister Isabelle Wagner.
