J.J., also known as Popo by his grandchildren, was the current Sr. Vice Commander of Chapter 61 Disabled American Veterans in Seguin. The DAV was most important to him. He loved to help solve problems; especially those of veterans’. It would break his heart to see a veteran suffer. He spent all of his time caring for others. Possessions were not his priority. J.J. was extremely devoted to his family and was a wonderful father. He did whatever he needed to do to make things better for his children, often driving his daughter to school in poor weather and waiting in the parking lot for hours to drive her home again to make sure she was safe. Popo’s hobby was his grandchildren. He loved to take his grandchildren out to dinner or do whatever their decision was. His granddaughters were referred to as his princesses. He always wanted to take his grandson fishing. In his excitement about fishing with his grandson, he recently bought all new fishing supplies and laid them out, but due to his health was not able to use them.
J.J. is survived by Elizabeth, his loving wife of 40 years, his children Veronica Shields and her husband Shawn; his son Carlos Chapa as well as his grandchildren Alexis Rae, Shawn Anthony and Ashley Grace. He will also be held in remembrance by his brother Alfred Chapa and his wife Aurelia, his sister Elida Callaway and her husband Scotty, his sister Teresa Chapa and her boyfriend Raul Beltran, his brother Chris Chapa and his girlfriend Mickey McGinty and also numerous nieces and nephews.
