

NEWBY, Mary Hezlep, 96, of New Kensington, PA, Treasure Island, FL and lately Foxdale Village, State College, PA passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at Foxdale Village Nursing Center in State College, PA.
Mary was born August 31, 1915 in Wilkensburg, PA., she moved to Treasure Island, FL in 1973 from New Kensington, PA.
She is preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Susan Ensley, brother, Jack Hezlep, parents, John Herron Hezlep and Althea Beatrice Hezlep and husband of 66 years, Irvin Lewis Newby.
Survived by sister Sally Sample and brother-in-law Charles Sample of PA, sons; Irvin Whitfield Newby of FL, Thomas Hezlep Newby of TN, Paul Lewis Newby of PA, grandsons; Mathew, Nathan, Christopher, Mark, Patrick, Thomas, Daniel, James; granddaughter Melinda and 14 great-grandchildren.
Mary was a graduate of Dormont High School (Pittsburgh), St. Margaret Hospital School of Nursing, University of Pittsburgh, BA/Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and Duquesne University, MA. Mary began her working life as personal secretary/private nurse for Mrs. Mary Mellon, first wife of the late Paul Mellon. Prior to World War II she traveled extensively with the Mellons to England, France and Switzerland when they were working with Karl Jung in the early days of Mrs. Mellon’s creation of the Bollingen Series of books. After the death of Mrs. Mellon, Mary went on to have an extensive career in Nursing Educational Administration and Guidance Counseling. She is remembered with enduring love, admiration and appreciation by the many women she empowered to go on to independently rewarding professions.
Visitation held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 27, 2011 at the funeral home.
Funeral service held 1:30 p.m. Friday, October 28, 2011 at the funeral home with committal prayers and interment at Garden Sanctuary Cemetery.
