Neil was born on June 22, 1932, in Ogden, Utah, to Louise Chase and Peter Van Eerden. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Weber State University and went on to build a successful career in sales and marketing, working for notable companies such as Zareh’s, Faberge, MEM Co, and Coperal.
On August 21, 1954, Neil married Eleanor (O'Shea) Van Eerden, with whom he shared a loving and enduring partnership. Neil was also a proud member of the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956, where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal for his service to his country.
Neil was a man of many passions, including gardening, photography, tennis, and music. His fondest memories were of his childhood in Ogden, Utah, and the vacations he took with his family and friends, moments that brought him great joy and shaped his life. Neil was also a gifted writer and the author of the book 'What You Don’t See When You Ain’t Got A Gun', which he dedicated to his grandfather, Ezra Justus Chase. The book was a reflection of the life observations instilled in him during their time spent together people-watching—a practice that greatly influenced Neil's worldview.
He is survived by his children, Kristin Klein (David Klein), Heidi Kutcher, and Peter Van Eerden (Hugo Sarmiento), as well as his grandchildren, Raymond Kutcher, Daniel Klein, Tina Perrotta, Peter Klein, and his friend and companion Chris Fiala. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor, his brother, Larry, and his parents.
Neil's legacy will live on through the love he shared with his family and his many contributions to the lives of those who knew him. His gentle spirit, sharp wit, and kind heart will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or any veterans' charity of your choice in Neil's memory.
