William Shanor was born September 22, 1919, in New Castle, Pennsylvania, to Walker McFee and Verna Meade Wills. Verna died giving birth. Walker’s love for his Son and his wish for him to have a better life, and Dr. Charles Krauth and Elizabeth Shanor’s wish to have a son to love, resulted in William’s adoption.
He is survived by three children: Karen Saltz of Tierra Verde, Fla, William Charles Shanor, Jr. of Ashland, Oregon, and Charles Krauth Shanor of Ashville, N.C. “Pop Pop” is also fondly remembered by nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
In 1938, at age nineteen, he eloped with Mary Jane Beattie, the woman that would be his partner for life, his love, until her passing fifty-five years later. They shared children, dancing, sailing, skin diving, family vacations, travel, and photography. Wherever they focused their interest magic happened.
He served honorably in the United States Merchant Marine in WWII. In 1949 Bill and Mary Jane moved to Miami, Florida and opened Shanor’s Shoes for Men. Later, the American Shoe and Hat Shop was added. As with anything he touched, his businesses were successful. He retired at 55.
He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. His wisdom, engaging nature, striving for perfection, loving ways, dedication to doing the right thing, and positive attitude, will always be source of wonder for those left behind. DIETYTILY
