(August 23, 1927 - November 26, 2012)
On Monday, November 26, 2012, Raymond Adelbert Robinson traveled on farther. His family and friends in the Sequim area are very thankful that he had chosen to return home to spend the latter years of his life among us.
Ray was born on August 23, 1927, in Port Townsend to C.A. "Bob" and Grace (Withers) Robinson.
In his youth, he lived in Chimacum, Clallam Bay and in the Sequim area, where he graduated from high school in 1945. Following his service in the U.S. Navy, Ray was employed at Boeing while earning his degree at the University of Washington. His field of expertise was in Soviet studies and economics.
Immediately following his graduation from the University of Washington, Ray was employed as an analyst and estimator at the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, D.C. During his time with the CIA, he was billeted in Vietnam.
He and his fellow worker and housemate enjoyed having a Vietnamese cook who often served a breakfast of diced fresh fruit marinated in liqueur — an excellent preparation for the most arduous and often terrifying work they were assigned to daily.
Subsequently, Ray transferred to the Defense Intelligence Agency, from which he retired.
In 1980, Ray married June Peterson in Sequim. This was to be a union he regarded as the best thing he ever did for himself. The couple lived in Washington, D.C., until 1995, when they returned to Sequim.
Ever a dedicated scholar, Ray maintained close contact with a number of former associates, always staying abreast of and promulgating his knowledge of and theories pertaining to his chosen field of Soviet studies.
Members of Ray's immediate family traveled on before him. He has joined his wife, June; brother R.W.; and parents.
Surviving him are a number of cousins. We wish to express heartfelt gratitude to Ray's caregiver, Arlen, who has far exceeded the call of duty to ensure Ray's comfort and wellbeing.
A memorial service will be scheduled in the spring. Those who wish may contribute to the Sequim Scholarship Fund at 601 North Sequim Avenue, Sequim, WA 98382.
Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge of final arrangements.
