Barrie Andrew McMurtrie, 72, of Ocean Isle Beach died Wednesday, September 14, 2022 as a result of injuries sustained in a plane crash with his friend Terry Druffel.
Barrie was born March 28, 1950 in Rhomford, Essex England, son of the late Andrew and Iris Bowdidge McMurtrie. Survivors include his loving wife, Toni Titone of Ocean Isle Beach, his stepdaughter Krista Koller of Asheville NC, stepsister Sal Hope of Cornwall, England, and dear cousin Sheila Bowdidge of Upminster, England.
Barrie grew up in Rumford. When he was a child, his grandfather taught him woodworking and fostered Barrie’s love for building and creating things. His father, who owned the neighborhood club/pub, and, was also a bookie which must have helped Barrie enjoy a pint.
Barrie received a degree in mechanical engineering in 1971. His first job was apprenticing at Telefex Morse LTD in England and was promoted to Production & Inventory Control Manager in 1982. His company built the controls for aircrafts during Operation Desert Storm, which Barrie oversaw. In 1985 Barrie was recommended by his supervisor to help a failing New York company. A one-week temporary assignment turned into a lifetime in the United States where his managerial skills continued to thrive.
Barrie met Toni in 1998, at a dance hall (of course!). They married on January 1st 2000 - new century new beginnings. Toni was the love of his life. He loved her unconditionally. They shared a love that could move mountains, (and sandbags!! 😉). The love they shared softened Barrie to his core, he learned how to relax into the beauty of life with Toni (he learned how to cook too!). Barrie was a pilot when they met, Barrie and Toni flew on many trips together and found a new home in NC during one of those adventures. Barrie was a pilot for more than 30 years, and it’s safe to say flying was another love of his life.
If you knew Barrie, you knew he was a wonderfully fun storyteller. People loved listening to his stories and his accent, only a select few could detect his BS. His wife being the first to know when he was roping people in.
Barrie had a beautiful mind. He understood the mechanics of things. He was a thinker and problem solver. To know Barrie is to know a man who loved a pint, enjoyed a good joke, and spending time with his mates and family. To be the receiver of his love and friendship was to know loyalty that had no bounds.
Barrie was a man with many talents, many tools, and many people who loved him.
