Chris was born September 18, 1965 in Jacksonville, North Carolina, son of Frankie and Woody Wood. Chris’s formative years were spent on the docks fishing and in the woods hunting in Holden Beach. Later on starting at age 14 he joined his father in helping with the start of Tri-Beach fire, and doing fundraising fish fry’s with his sister and Mother. He was active duty Army from 1983-1985. He then worked at the Hercules Plant from 1989-1994 In 1995 he graduated from Paramedic school and started with Brunswick County EMS, later joining Horry County Fire Rescue. It was with Horry County Fire and Rescue in 1999, that he met the love of his life, Susan. They were married and had their first child in 2001 and then the next in 2007. In 2007, he traveled to Baghdad Iraq as a Private Duty Contract Paramedic attached to the Marine Corps. When he returned in 2008 he started BLET and joined the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office from 2008 until 2020 when he retired, but remained active until early 2025. His last years with the Sheriff's office he headed the new installation of the CJIN Tracking System initiated under Marsy’s Law, specifically designed to keep domestic violence offenders away from their victims.
Chris was an avid hunter and fisherman. His youngest daughter, Marci, was his “fishing buddy” as he so proudly called her. They spent a lot of time in the woods and on the river. He passed his knowledge down and showed his love through teaching and quality time. One of which he loved dearly was William, Savannah’s husband, which Chris called his Son. Chris and William spent many hours together, bonding over hunting, fishing, and gun sports.
Although Chris kept many jobs and hobbies through the years, one thing that never changed was his relationship with Christ. Up until his last breath he continued to praise God for all of the goodness in his life. Anytime Chris was told he was “a good man” Chris’s response was “No, I am a broken man, saved by Gods grace, and blessed with the opportunity to share His light”. Chris shared Gods light namely through his time with Sonburst Ministries with Savannah, his oldest daughter. This continues to be Chris’s greatest legacy.
