

She was born in her childhood home of Ash on August 21, 1929. She was the daughter of the late Nelson Tate Bennett and Edna Jacobs Bennett.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 74 years, Bryan R. Smith, Sr.; son, Joseph Nelson Smith, Sr.; father in-law, Joseph Sicero Smith; mother in-law, Bessie Hickman Smith; brother, Nelson Tate Bennett, Sr., sister in-laws, Isolene Rosa, Dora Kannady, Maggie Smith, brother in-laws, Ernest Rosa, Boyd Kannady, Horace Smith, and David Dawson.
Mama, Grandma Jackie, MeeMaw, Mama Jackie, and Aunt Jackie were some of the names of the many hats she wore. Jackie touched many lives in her life as she raised a family and worked on the family farm with her husband Bryan. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, growing up in the church and raising her family in the same church. She loved sharing her love of God and Bible Study. Through her life at Friendship, she served as Church Historian, Church Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, WMU Director, Acteens Leader and served in Bible School and Hospitality. Jackie Loved cooking, baking and weddings. She shared that love through catering and directing weddings, making birthday cakes and other celebratory cakes through her business, Jackie’s Kitchen Katering. She was an employee for Ward Company as cashier, bookkeeper, and store manager. She was Postmaster for US Postal Service in Ash for 36 years, retiring in January 1996.
She attended Southeastern Community College and was a teacher’s assistant at Waccamaw Elementary
School and later was Parent/Volunteer Coordinator for the school. She retired from this position at the age of 76. She served on the board of Southeastern Women’s Auxiliary for Soil and Water Conservation where she received the Southeast Woman of the Year in 1987 and the Woodmen of the World award for her work in conservation. She was the recipient of the YWCA Cape Fear Woman of Achievement award.
Her first love was her family. The care of her husband, children, and all of her family was most important to her. She was Class Mom and worked tirelessly to help all 4 achieve goals and dreams. She loved working with young people and was Mama Jackie to many through her involvement in the community, church, and school. Her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews were a source of pride for her as well. Her spunky ways, nurturing presence, and all her words of wisdom are missed, but will live on through those she touched.
She is survived by her children, Bryan Robert Smith, Jr. (Carolyn), Samuel Cicero Smith (Orbie), Leanne Smith Altman (Gary); grandchildren, Sonya Smith Burchell (Alan), Andrew Bryan Smith (Ashley), Joseph Nelson Smith, Jr. (Karen), Robert Benjamin Smith, Kimberly Leanne Allen (Chris), Sarah Altman Gaddy (Cameron), Jacqueline Rebekah Altman Diaz (Javier); great grandchildren, Clay Burchell, Cooper Burchell, Bella Smith, Tucker Smith, Hailey Smith, Jackson Smith, Carter Smith, Aydan Allen, Wesley Allen, Isabelle Allen, and Bennett Gaddy; sister, Mary Zillah Dawson; sister-in-law, Iris Bennett; step-great grandchildren, Tim Brisco, Nate Brisco, Drew Brisco; Special neighbors, Steve and Renee Long; long term family helpers, Ricky Simmons and Miles Price. Barbara Coley and a host of special nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Family is available to receive friends throughout this time at the family home, 7520 Pireway Road, NW, Longwood, NC. Funeral Services will be held at Friendship Baptist Church on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at 12pm (noon) with the Reverend Mark Register officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to service.
