Lorraine was born March 22, 1926 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, daughter of the late Ulric Poirier and Laura Croteau Poirier. She was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, George Leo Mitchell. She retired from Foster Grant Company, Leominster, MA in 1984 and together they spent more than 25 years as snowbirds wintering in Florida. They traveled extensively, all along meeting new friends they kept in touch with for years. She definitely loved people and participated in social clubs such as the Friendship Club and the Daughters of Isabelle. Lorraine also kept herself active by playing cards and dancing.
One of her favorite phrases was “dancing is living.” But being with family made her the happiest. Her love of family started at a young age, being one of ten children, Marcel, Rene, Maurice, Simone, Anita, Roger, Pauline, Raymond and Aline.
Survivors include her son, Wayne Mitchell and wife Diane of Myrtle Beach, SC and daughter, Lisa Shumway and husband Dan of Leland, NC; four grandchildren, Kathryn Pyle, Bethany Mitchell, Laura Veling, and Ryan Shumway; seven great grandchildren, Liam and Sylvie Pyle, Elise and Benjamin Plante, and Camden, Linden, and Hayden Veling; one brother, Raymond Poirier of Montreal; and many nieces and nephews she loved.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Massachusetts and she will be laid to rest at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Fitchburg, MA.
