She was born in Brunswick County on December 2, 1931 the daughter of the late Dorsey Smith and Gertrude Carlisle and was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel William “ DW” Long, Jr. also a brother, James Albert Smith and two sisters, Gerlie Benton and Vivian FormyDuval.
Mrs. Long was a member of New Britton Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. Lula was very active in her community. She was a substitute teacher at West Brunswick High School. She loved to cook and working with her hands in the garden and farming. Mrs. Long and her husband, DW Long owned and operated Longs General Store for many years in Ash.
Surviving are a son, Donnie Ray Long of Ash; a daughter, Karen Gayle Long Rollins of Winterport, Maine; a granddaughter Michelle Hines and husband Steven C. Hines; six great-grandchildren, Kristin Abel, Justin Fulford, Clay Hines, Tyler Hines, Curtis Todd and Brandon Todd.
Funeral Services will be held at two o’clock in the afternoon on Saturday January 12, 2019 at White Funeral and Cremation Service Shallotte Chapel.
Burial will follow in the Whiteville Memorial Gardens.
A time of Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be: Andrew Mitchell, Tyler Hardee, Justin Fulford, Clay Hines, Tyler Hines, Curtis Todd and Brandon Todd.
Honorary pallbearers will be: Wesley Abel and Stephen Hardee.
