Phillip was born in New Hanover County on November 3, 1974 and was the son of Melton "Mule Train" Hewett and Barbara "Bobbie" Smith Hewett. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, LaDane Hewett. He was a carpenter.
He is survived by his mother, Barbara "Bobbie" Hewett of Supply; a son, Scott Hewett of Bolivia; a grandson, Asher Hewett; a brother Clark Hewett of Supply and a sister, Heather Lyle of Fair Bluff, NC.
