Steve was born on November 21, 1939 to Hoyal and Cornelia Varnam of Varnam Town. Right after high school, Steve joined the US Air Force. After his four years in the Air Force, he felt a need to expand his service to his country and went to work for National Security Agency in Fort Meade, MD as an intelligence officer. After several years of extensive travel throughout Europe with NSA, Steve felt his roots pulling him back home. He would return and open up a seafood business and become involved in community, county and state concerns.
After earning his college degree, Steve’s passion for criminal justice reform took him to Washington, DC where he served in the capacity of Vice President of Justice Fellowship, an arm of Prison Fellowship Ministries. After serving 20 years in ministry, Steve and Donna moved back to Brunswick County and have enjoyed retirement life in the lovely community of Wood Song and belonging to the church family of Camp United Methodist Church in Shallotte.
On December 31, 1977, Steve and Donna blended their love and lives together to build a family. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 48 yrs Donna and daughters Debra (Doug) and Dana; sons Steve Jr. and Douglas; grandchildren whom he called his 5-Amens: Ali, Mary, Emma, Nik and Sam.
