He was born on February 26, 1954 in Harrisonburg and was the son of Lois Comer Herring and her husband, George, of Elkton and the late Delmer Dean.
Pumpkin was a lifelong resident of Page and Rockingham county and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and NASCAR.
In addition to his mother and step-father, he is survived by a son, Jason Dean of Elkton; a daughter Courtney Dean and companion, Gary Knight, of Shenandoah; two grandchildren, Abbigail Sellers and Hanna Towe; two sisters, Debra Meadows and husband, Jerry, Vicky Hensley and husband, Brent, all of Elkton; a brother, Ricky Dean and wife, Kelly of McGaheysville; and a companion, Ann Dean of Shenandoah.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 am, Saturday, November 4, 2017 at McAlister Cemetery with Pastor Carter Dean officiating.
