Mary Ellen (Houser) Kyger

8 février 195023 mai 2021

Mary Ellen Houser Kyger of Rockingham, formerly of Shenandoah, loving mother, grandmother, colleague, and friend, passed away at her home on Sunday, May 23, 2021.

Mary was born on February 8, 1950 in Luray and was the daughter of the late Edward Page and Lucille Virginia Dovel Houser.

On June 28, 1969, she married Warren Garfield Kyger, Jr., who departed this life on May 21, 1997.

Mary is survived by a daughter, Susan Kyger Kile of Rockingham; son-in-law, James; three grandchildren, William Garrett, Bryant Gage, and Genna Paige; and a brother, Lynn Page Houser of Stanley.

A 1968 graduate of Page County High School, Mary entered the nursing profession after graduating from the RMH School of Nursing in 1971. For nearly 43 years, she proudly, compassionately, and fiercely served humanity as a registered nurse in the Emergency Department and later in the Nursing Coordinator’s Office at Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

Mary had a natural gift for mentoring that was exemplified when she shared her experience and wisdom acquired over many years of nursing. As gratifying as she found her professional calling to be, her greatest joy came from her adored grandchildren and the treasured moments she spent with them. Mary’s legacy will live on forever in the hearts of those her care enriched.

Interment will be private, and a Celebration of Life gathering will be planned for a future date.

In lieu of flowers, her family welcomes contributions to the W. G. and Mary Kyger Memorial Scholarship, c/o Atlantic Union Bank, 440 South Main St, Harrisonburg, VA 22801. This annual scholarship will be awarded to a Page County High School senior who will be furthering their education in the health care field. Preference will be given to those pursuing a degree in nursing or fire/rescue.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Lindsey-Kyger Funeral Home in Shenandoah and condolences and memories may be shared by visiting www.lindseykygerfuneralhome.com.

I am very sad to hear of Mary’s passing. I met Mary in January of 1982 when I came to work at RMH. I was fresh out of the army and it only took me a short time to give Mary her nickname. “SARGE”. Mary was a great nurse and all work ethic. She was a no nonsense person and as long as you did your job, you were ok with Mary. If you were one of the lucky ones to break thru her armour, you found a very caring and loyal friend. I spend 33 years working with Mary and am honored to have been her friend. The times our ER family shared was so special. So many stories and memories were made during that wonderful journey. Thank you Mary for including me in your journey. Peace my friend, you will be missed and remembered. Joe Deavers.

I worked with Mary at PMH, she was one of the finest nurses I have ever had the pleasure to work with.

Mary was house supervisor when I was a new charge nurse and she was intimidating, but as I worked with her more I knew she was sooo good at her job and fair and kind. She was the supervisor when my grandma died and I never forgot her kindness or how she interacted with families. Then when I stepped into the house supervisor role she was a great teacher, mentor and I've taken a lot of what I've learned from her into who I am as a nurse. She was an example to a lot of us and I am grateful for what she taught us.

Susan and family my condolences and Prayers to you all. Mary was one of my all time favorite people. We last chatted in April. She was a wealth of knowledge any nurse would envy.
May God comfort and give you strength.
With her heart of gold she is finally resting above and completely healthy.

It is with deep sadness to learn of Mary’s passing. I knew her well with my interactions with the RNH emergency department while living in Harrisonburg. Mary was a very professional and dedicated individual who never ceased to make me smile when speaking and being involved with her in her work. The community has lost a true patriot and compassionate person. Thank you to the entire family for sharing such a fine person with us.
