Denis “Denny” Wayne Glassner, 75, of Louisville went to meet his Heavenly Father on Sept. 22, 2023. He died peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones.
Denny was born Dec. 16, 1947, in Louisville to the late Edward and Mary (Herdt) Glassner. He grew up eating day-old doughnuts and other baked goods from Glassner’s Bakery, the Germantown bakery his father ran.
A 1965 graduate of DeSales High School, Denny met a pretty girl named Janet Jeter while playing on a bowling league with his sister, Linda. He stalked Janet for a while before she finally agreed to go out with him. The night of Denny’s first date with Janet, his dad, always the jokester, doused him with half a bottle of Old Spice aftershave to help him impress her. The Old Spice worked! And the couple started dating shortly before Denny got drafted into the Army and sent to Baumholder, Germany, where he served as a teletype specialist.
Denny and Janet got married in 1970 after he returned from Germany, and they had four children: Jill, Brian, Jacob and Daniel. Denny loved his family.
Before retiring, Denny worked for the United States Postal Service for almost 40 years—though he’d probably tell you it felt like 60 years. For most of those years, he worked nights as a maintenance mechanic at the Louisville Main Branch on Gardiner Lane.
In retirement, Denny enjoyed spending time with Janet and their grandkids. In the summer, Denny and Janet often spent several weeks driving across the country, visiting National Parks and other historic sites.
Denny’s faith was extremely important to him, and he demonstrated that faith by loving and serving his neighbors. He had an amazing ability to fix things—whether it was a broken toy or a sputtering engine or washing machine. His basement workshop, where he kept his meticulously organized tools and other parts, was often filled with fix-it projects for friends and family members.
Throughout his life, Denny helped widows, widowers, friends and family members with home repairs and hospital appointments. And there’s no telling how many people he helped move with his unmatched packing skills, filling every nook and cranny in his pickup truck.
Denny was a founding member of Lighthouse Christian Fellowship, where he also put his repair skills to work.
Denny’s hobbies included splitting firewood, selling “junk” on eBay, traveling (but not by plane), playing games (Tripoli was a favorite), and shooting (he was a crack shot with his old Crossman pellet rifle). He never went anywhere without a pen or his trusty pocketknife. He also enjoyed watching NFL football and University of Louisville and University of Kentucky sports.
Denny was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Mary Glassner; sister, Donna Vest, and brother, George Glassner.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 53 years, Janet (Jeter/Jecker) Glassner; children, Jill Wright (Mark), Brian Glassner (Noelle), Jacob Glassner (Mandy) and Daniel Glassner (Kristin); grandchildren: Micah, Sophia, Caleb and Lydia Wright; Novella, Aiden, Gabriel Josiah and Sadie Glassner; and Eden and Jude Glassner; and siblings: Linda Vance, Patricia Bridges (Buddy) and Victor Glassner (Barbra).
The celebration of his life will be at Schoppenhorst Underwood & Brooks Funeral Home, 123 Winning Colors Drive, Mount Washington, KY 40047, on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2023, at 10 a.m. with burial to follow at Crosswater Gardens Cemetery, 7110 Billtown Road, Louisville, KY 40291. Family and friends may pay their respects on Tuesday, Sept. 26, from 1 p.m.. to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the service time at 10 a.m.
