

Shreveport, LA- A memorial service celebrating the life of Charles E. Johnson, known to his family and friends as "Charlie" will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 in the chapel of Centuries Memorial Funeral Home. Officiating at his service will be the Rev. Billy Pierce and the Rev. Darwin Hunter. Charlie went to be with the Lord on February 12, 2014 after a long and hard battle with cancer, the only thing in his life he could not win.
He was born in Delhi, LA on July 25, 1934. He lived most of his life in Bastrop, LA. He was of the Church of Christ faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. E.L. Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Peggy Ogletree Johnson; sons, Lane Johnson and wife Tammy and Jason Johnson and fiancee’ Shannon Wynn; sisters, Mary Cavender, Bobbie Harris and Edith Magruder, as well as, many nieces and nephews.
Charlie was in the automobile business for 45 years. He was with Holmes Pontiac for 20 and was their top salesman for twelve straight years. While he was at Holmes Pontiac in 1984 he was top salesman in the Memphis Zone, which was made up of six southern states, making him Pontiac Master Sales Manager in the Pontiac Master Sales Guild. Charlie retired from Chevy Land in 2005 where he was their top salesman for many years. He was later appointed a sales manager for Chevy Land.
When he graduated from high school he was offered a scholarship to play football from five different colleges. LSU and La Tech were two of the five. Charlie graduated from Northwestern State University where he played on a four year football scholarship starting in 1953. He was a four year starter in football and also a four year letterman on the track team. He made all conference for two years in football and one year in track and field. He was one of the most outstanding tacklers ever to play at Northwestern in his days. In track and field he was known as the “Discus Dynamo” in helping the track team to win four straight titles. He set many records at NSU. He was inducted into the “N” club Hall of Fame at Northwestern on June 24, 1995.
He was also a very avid bass fisherman and golfer. He won many fishing and golf tournaments. He was a very good husband and father. He loved his son’s more than they will ever know. He always worked hard to make his family a good living. We will miss him dearly.
The family would like to thank Dr. Tommy Mook and Dr. Craig Miller for the love and care they showed Charlie and his family during his illness.
