Diane was born on February 18, 1941 in Jackson, MS to Ellis Cooper Myers Sr. and Ima Riley Myers and went home to be with her Lord and Savior on December 29, 2024.
Diane spent the first fourteen years of her life on her family’s farm in Shivers, Mississippi before moving to Silver Creek, Mississippi. She attended Silver Creek High School before transferring to and graduating with honors from Copiah-Lincoln High School in Wesson, Mississippi. Diane married Rogell Fortenberry at the age of 20 and they were married for 57 years before he passed away in 2018.
She received her teaching degree from Louisiana College with a 4.0 grade point average and subsequently earned two Master's degrees in education from Centenary College while teaching. In 1980 she began full time teaching at Walnut Hill Middle School and retired there as Assistant Principal at 65.
Diane was very active in the church teaching Sunday School, leading choirs, vacation bible schools and playing piano/organ among other activities. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother (Nina), to both grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Diane was the first to sign up to lead all of her kids' sporting and scouting activities. She was an expert seamstress and sewed many of her childrens clothes for years.
She is remembered for her love of sitting at the piano and playing for the family as well as teaching others how to play. Not only could she read sheet music, she was also able to play by ear. She will be deeply missed but we rejoice as those with hope.
Diane was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Rogell Fortenberry, as well as her parents and brother, Ellis Cooper Myers Jr. (Val). Left to cherish her memories are her daughters: Susan Fortenberry, and Sandy Fortenberry Joiner (Tom); son: Darin Fortenberry (Amy); brother: Jefferson Davis Riley Myers (Susan); grandchildren: Michel F. Duvall (Moss), Chelsea F. Dykes (Stephen), Alex Joiner, Austin Joiner and Aidan Joiner; great-grandchildren: Ashton Dykes, Brynn Duvall, Tucker Duvall, Jaxon Dykes, Ellie Duvall and Rowan Dykes.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Louise, Doris and Cora for their kindness, support and care.
