Dorothy Yearwood McGovern, 89, passed peacefully in her home on December 18, 2018. Her daughters who were present when she passed, stated that Dorothy exited this world as she lived - "she did it her way".
A Memorial service will be held for Dorothy and George E. McGovern, Jr., who was her husband of 64 years. George passed away on December 14, 2012. After George returned from serving overseas in the US Army during World War II, Dorothy and George met while both were attending Centenary College. George was smitten upon meeting the "petite" Dorothy Yearwood, with marriage occurring thereafter. George McGovern began his military service as a private in the Army rising to Major General. He was also a successful business owner of Yearwood's, Inc. and always held leadership roles in the churches they attended. Dorothy was the matriarch and family anchor. Dorothy and George shared a deep commitment to each other, their faith, family, and work. Dorothy also had a sweet tooth for life and a love for chocolate, which she seldom shared with others. The accomplishments of one required the sacrifice of the other, which each gave unconditional. They lived a purpose driven life, which was centered around their faith. They believed their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and their respective spouses were their richest blessings.
It is the wishes of the five children, George III, Mike, Mary, Pat and Pam and their spouses, the eleven grandchildren and their spouses and fourteen great-grandchildren that this be a time of celebration for the lives of both Dorothy and George McGovern. It will be a time to celebrate and remember their individual and collective contributions.
A Memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at Woodridge Baptist Church, located at 850 E. Bert Kouns, Shreveport, LA 71106. A visitation will precede the Memorial service, starting at 1:00 pm. Dave McKinney , who is their son-in-law, will officiate. Dave continues to hold a special place in Dorothy's heart and is a blessing to the family.
In lieu of flowers, please honor George and Dorothy's wishes with contributions to Woodridge Baptist Church, 850 E. Bert Kouns Industrial Loop, Shreveport, LA, designated to the International Mission Board for the Lottie Moon Offering.
The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Regional Hospice, Linda McNeil and Marilyn Lee for their care.
