It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John David Friar, who passed away on January 21, 2025, at the age of 74. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on October 27, 1950, John spent most of his life in Shreveport and East Texas.
David committed his life to the Shreveport Fire Department, serving for 28 years with dedication and honor. After his retirement, he remained deeply involved in the fire service community by selling fire products, maintaining his connection to the brotherhood he cherished. This brotherhood was also celebrated with his ROMEO group, where the camaraderie never ran out of stories or laughs.
However, David's greatest role in life was a "Papa" to his beloved grandchildren. He never missed an activity or game, always making sure to be present in their lives----whether it was slinging his folding chair over his shoulder to sit on the sidelines or teaching them how to drive. It was a role that he was most proud of, and he was deeply loved for his unwavering support and presence.
David is survived by his wife, Charlotte Friar; daughters, Melissa Gunn (Clint Palmer) and Michele Anglin (Tim Brannan); sons, Kyle Friar (Lisa Friar) and Michael Tate (Saundra Tate); grandchildren, Cole David Anglin, Peyton Gunn, Haley Gunn (Dusty Cole), Aubrey Gunn, Audrey Claire "AC" Gunn, Timothy Tate (Martha Tate), Ashley Moss (Jacob Moss), and Lyla Faith Friar; great grandchildren, Anna Grace Moss, Kasey Reese Gunn, Andy Faye Cole; and his brother, Steve Friar (Liz Friar).
He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Ann Young Friar; father, Arthur Columbus "AC" Friar; brother, Jerry Friar; and granddaughter, Landry Faith Anglin.
David's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, service, and laughter will never be forgotten.
A visitation for David will be held Monday, January 27, 2025 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Centuries Memorial Funeral Home, 8801 Mansfield Road, Shreveport, Louisiana 71108. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Open Range Fellowship, 9950 US 80, Greenwood, Louisiana 71033 with Rev. Dennis Aaron officiating. Interment will be at Centuries Memorial Park.
