Memorial services to honor the life of Lloyd Wayne Walker, 73, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 20, 2012, at N.W. LA. Veteran’s Cemetery in Keithville, LA.
Wayne was born October 14, 1938, and entered into peaceful rest on January 16, 2012, at the Louisiana War Veterans Home, where he had been a resident for the past three years. Wayne graduated from Fair Park High School in 1958 where he was a star football player. He was offered a full football scholarship but turned it down to join the Marine Corp. Wayne specialized in communications and worked much of his career with Navel Security. Wayne traveled with the Navy so he was able to take his family on all tours of duty except for war zones. He spent time in Cypress, Okinawa and Hawaii as well as many of the states. He was a Vietnam War Veteran with twenty-four years of faithful service to his country. Some of his honors & awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal 4th award, Vietnam Service Medals, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Combat Action Ribbon, Phillippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation and was a .45 caliber pistol expert. While in the Marines he played semi-pro football for the Norfolk Navy Tars. After a major knee injury took him out of playing the game he loved so much, Wayne began referring football on his off time. He also loved playing the guitar and singing country and western music, golfing and fishing, and watching the New Orleans Saints! Wayne could never get enough of Coca Cola, chocolate ice cream, orange circus peanuts, sardines and Fritos! In his younger years, he loved square dancing and singing at the Louisiana Hayride.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ethel Walker, two sisters Eloise Walker and Ruth Walker Roberson, one brother, Billy Ray Walker and one nephew, Dean Walker. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife of 16 years, Christine Walker; former wife and mother of his four children, Mary Fields; son, Mike Walker; daughters, Karen Brogan and husband, Bob, Bonnie Dickson, Stephanie McGuffee and husband, Brian; step-daughter, Veronica Owen Fisher and husband, Mark; brother, Lo Walker and wife, Adele; grandchildren, Michael Pilkinton, Chase and Nicole Dickson, Karsten, Madison, and Dawson Brogan, Shelby and Tyler McGuffee; step-grandchildren, Tony and Tim Quicci and Nik Ross; great-granddaughter, Ryleigh Dickson; step great-granddaughter, Bella Quicci; and numerous nieces and extended family.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the entire staff of the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home for the exceptional care they provided both professionally and personally. Mr. Walker, otherwise known as and fondly referred to by most of his care givers as “Help Me” received genuine loving and compassionate care that truly went far beyond the scope of typical care given in most senior care/assisted living facilities today.
