

MACKAY, Catherine Gould 91 – Stewiacke, passed away August 24, 2010, in Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro. Born in Stewiacke, August 9, 1919, she was the only child of the late Stewart and Emma (MacNutt) Gould. She graduated from the Provincial Normal College and began her teaching career, then married and had her family. When her youngest child was a year old she resumed teaching in Stewiacke Elementary School, where she taught for 27 years; the last 9 as principal. While teaching, she commuted evenings, Saturdays and summers to St. Mary’s University, where she obtained her B.A. degree. She was a faithful member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, where she was organist for over 30 years. She is survived by daughters Bev Ellis, Brookland, Pictou County; Bette (Ronald) Gourley and Mary Jane (Lennie) McDonald, both of Stewiacke; son Jim (Brenda), Milford; foster daughter Patty Bernard, Lower Sackville; almost son Fred Thurrott, Stewiacke; 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; she is also survived by sister of her heart Betty Ashley; lifelong best friends Theresa Martin and Edie Cox. She was predeceased by her husband Edward, son Brian and great grandson Benjamin, both aged 2 years, son-in-law Gerald Ellis. Visitation 2-4 & 7-9 pm, Friday in Ettinger Funeral Home, Shubenacadie with funeral service 2 pm, Saturday in Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Stewiacke, Rev. Lloyd Ripley officiating assisted by Rev. Patricia McKenna. Interment in Pine Grove Cemetery, Stewiacke East. Family flowers only. Donations in memory of Catherine may be made to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Stewiacke.
