WEATHERHEAD (Frail), Gertrude “Erna” - 91, Wolfville Nursing Home, formerly of Upper Rawdon, died Monday, April 23, 2012 at Valley Regional Hospital. Erna was born on September 20, 1920 in Scotch Village, Nova Scotia to Bertha and Edward Frail. Her early years were enjoyed in Scotch Village, West Gore, Centreville and other valley communities. She was married in 1942 to Earle Weatherhead and moved to Upper Rawdon where they raised 4 sons and were involved in many church and community activities. Erna was an avid writer and had numerous pen pals who she corresponded with over a span of many years. She kept a personal journal, which, until recently, was faithfully completed and often referred to when she needed to refresh a memory. She enjoyed travelling and was a fun-loving travel companion on a number of trips including a visit to Australia. Erna had many cherished friends and relatives in Upper Rawdon and missed those relationships as she aged and was less able to maintain them. In her later years Erna reconnected with many cousins in Kings County. During her last years in New Minas and then the Wolfville Nursing Home, the friendship and kindness of this extended family was treasured. Erna is survived by sons Larry (Diane) of Ilderton, Ontario, Edward and Brian (Debbie) of Upper Rawdon; grandchildren, Chris (Linda) Weatherhead, Tammy (Vince) White, Rachael Robinson, Shereen (Kevin) Miller, David (Colleen) Weatherhead, Lisa (Gabriel) Fair, Andrew Weatherhead; great-granddaughter, Chelsea White; sister Jean (Willard) Campbell; daughter-in-law Rose Weatherhead. Erna was predeceased by her husband Earle Clinton Weatherhead; son Wayne; great-granddaughter Savannah; sisters Marjorie Ettinger, Una “Nan” (Bud) Bergren. Visitation will be from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2 at West Gore Disciples Church. Funeral will be held Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in the West Gore Disciples Church, with Rev. Angus MacDonald officiating. A reception will follow in the Upper Rawdon Community Hall. Interment will be in the Upper Rawdon cemetery at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Ettinger’s Funeral Home. Memorial gifts may be made to the West Gore Disciples Church, or a charity of one’s choice. The family would like to thank the staff of Wolfville Nursing Home for the gentle care and warm friendship afforded to Erna in the three years she was there.
