Mary Ruth Phelan

PHELAN (Garden), Mary “Ruth”, Enfield, with hearts full of sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. Mary “Ruth” (Garden) Phelan 90, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 31, 2012 in Serenity Lodge surrounded by her loving family. Born in 1921 in Enfield, she was a daughter of the late Forrest and Mary (Horne) Garden. Ruth was predeceased by her husband, love of her life and best buddy, Gerald “Jed” Phelan in 2006. She is survived by daughters, Lynn (Don) MacLean, Victoria, BC,; Sherry (Roger) Feener, of Enfield; Carol Phelan (Don) Carew, of Elmsdale; sons Terry, Califorina; Jim (Anita) of Dartmouth; Ray (Sherri) of Vancouver. She was also blessed with grandchildren, Troy, Lee, Tracey, Mark, Cody, Maria, Angel; as well as great-grandchildren, Marc, Nicholas, Josh, Jonah, Ethan, Jacob, Tiana and Rylie. Ruth is also survived by sisters, Kathleen MacDonell, Joyce Carroll, Marlene Underhill, all of Enfield; Regina Morash of Prince George, BC; sister-in-law Marie Phelan of Halifax, and brother-in-law Ed Phelan of Quebec, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers Jerome, Gerald, Elroy, Carl, Rayburn, Carl in infancy, sisters, Virginia “Ginny”, Audrey, Margaret, Marlene, Monica, Florence and Alma. The family is eternally grateful to the wonderful staff of Serenity Lodge. They embraced Ruth like family, and their kindness will forever be remembered. We owe a debt of gratitude to Ruth’s family physician, Dr. Ian MacNeil. We are also grateful to VON staff and to Sue Gibbon of Palliative Care. Visitation 7-9 p.m. today April 1 and funeral 11 a.m. Monday, April 2, both in St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church, Enfield. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery. Friends and family are invited to attend a reception in St. Bernard’s Reception Hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Serenity Lodge.
