

Charles Robert Cherry, Jr., age 86, of Olney, MD passed away Saturday, August 2, 2025. He was born June 2, 1939, in Johnsonburg, PA, the beloved son of the late Lillian and Charles Cherry, Sr. Doc, as he was affectionately known, was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 50 years, Barbara, and sister Kathleen Nunley. Left to cherish his memory include two sons, Stephen Cherry (wife Brenda), and Donald Cherry; two daughters, Christina McLaine (husband Brian), and Kimberly Hoover (husband John); seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and many family members and friends.
He grew up in Greenbelt and Langley Park, Maryland. Following graduation from High Point High School in 1957, he received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Maryland, a master’s degree from the University of the Pacific, and a PhD from The Catholic University of America. Doc had his own clinical psychology practice in Olney, MD for over 40 years and received much gratification knowing he helped people daily.
Doc was a passionate golfer, crossword puzzle solver, reader, and enjoyed family get-togethers. Later in his life, he loved sitting on his porch, greeting neighbors as they traversed his street. Doc was easy going, always interested in others’ lives, warm, accepting, caring, and made others’ feel welcome. There are no words that can express how grateful we are to have had this patriarch leading our family.
A visitation for Charles will be held Thursday, August 14, 2025, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home, 11800 New Hampshire, Ave. Silver Spring, MD 20904. Also, final visitation will occur on Friday, August 15, 2025 at 10:30 am followed by a funeral service. A committal service will occur from 1:00pm to 1:30pm at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20906.
