Lifelong teacher and former docent at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington DC, Corinne P. Belcher, known for her caring and giving spirit, passed to a place of greater peace on Tuesday evening, April 12, 2022 at the age of 95. When asked what the definition of love is she replied "Giving of yourself. Thinking of others first." That is the selfless way she led her life.
Corinne was born in Washington, DC. She attended Shaw Junior High and Dunbar High School, graduating in three years in 1943 as the valedictorian at both schools. Corinne went on to excel at D.C. Teacher's College and earned a Master's Degree from New York University. Corinne taught primary grades in the D.C. public schools for four decades. She taught Sunday school for many years at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, a national historic landmark church created for and by Black Episcopalians, including Corinne's grandfather, in 1879.
The funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 1514 15th St. N.W. Washington, DC. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the University of the District of Columbia, Department of Education, Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington, DC or Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, MD.
