Edith Loretta Slater

Edith Loretta Kelly was born on May 30, 1930, in Olney, Maryland to Samuel and Mary Anna Kelly. Edith married George Slater in 1948 and was a devoted mother to her children George Jr., Stanley, Carol, Rick, Rodney, Stephen and Jessica Damien Slater who Edith raised like her daughter.

Edith leaves to cherish and be comforted by her siblings, Sara Dorsey, Frederick “Mickey” Kelly, Samuel “Booney” Kelly, Marie Riggs; grandchildren and great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews who adored her; other relatives; dear friends; and loved ones.

Edith grew up in Holly Grove, where she fostered friendships that would last into her golden years, especially with her best friend and sister, Lottie Kelly. A caring spirit, she worked at St. John the Baptist Church for over three decades, and was a loving caretaker to her mother and father. Edith was a quiet woman, with few words and a beautiful smile.

She was very supportive of her children and friends. A good friend of Stan and Bunny, Ernie “Beanie” Williams often told the story of how he was grateful for Edith while in a foxhole in Vietnam, in the hard rain and cold. He said what helped to get him home was thinking about Miss Eddie’s fried chicken, home french fries and apple pie made from the orchard next door.

Edith is preceded in death by her husband George Slater; children Carol and George Jr. “Bunny”; her parents Samuel and Mary Anna Kelly; siblings Mary Francis, Louise, Lucille, Charles “Buck”, Lottie, Clarence, Barbara, and David; her goddaughter Stacey Kelly; nieces Mary Dorsey, Denise Dorsey, Charlie Savage, Indy Person, and Anita Kelly; and nephew, Renaldo Kelly.

A funeral mass for Edith will be held Thursday, September 11, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, 12319 New Hampshire Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20904. Following the funeral mass will be a burial at 1:00 PM at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20906.
