On August 3, 2023, Flora Wolf (nee Kreidman) of Silver Spring, MD, passed away peacefully in her sleep, with her sons by her side. A great woman, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Flora was born on December 4, 1927, in the Bronx, NY. She leaves behind a family that she was very proud of and devoted to. She is survived by her children Adam (Carol) and Everett (Tsili); daughter-in-law Lisa Menditch (Frank); grandchildren Markita Walker (Johnny), Alex (Maddy), Lauren Strawbridge (Matt), Michelle, Rachel, Maya, and Leila; and great-grandchildren Clark, Wynter, Eli and Avery. Flora was preceded in death by her eldest son Mitchell and her ex husband Jacob (Jack) Wolf (they remained friends throughout their lives). Her family loved her dearly and will never forget her charm, wit, and undying love and caring for them.
Flora attended Brooklyn College and graduated from The University of Georgia with a B.A. in Psychology. Following that, she attended The University of Maryland, where she received an Advanced Graduate Specialist Diploma and M. Ed. in Rehabilitation Counseling. Her empathy and deep desire to care for and heal others, as well as her passion for social justice, human rights, and mental health, led her to spend most of her professional career as a counseling psychologist, working in rehabilitation and corrections. She saw the good in everyone. She was easy to talk to and always made a safe space for people to feel comfortable being themselves.
Flora had a love for traveling, reading, doing crossword puzzles, listening to NPR, and even bowling up until her 90s. One of her greatest joys in life was spending time with friends and family. She and another close family-friend enjoyed leading the tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving and Passover with both families every year for almost half a century. She was passionate about her Jewish culture, celebrating the high holidays and being an active member in the Beth Chai chapter of The Jewish Humanist Congregation of Greater Washington. She was a brilliant writer, who delivered beautiful, sentimental speeches at all her grandchildren’s weddings and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs.
Flora was known by people she loves as “the most unique person they know.” She was strong, resilient, brave, independent, curious, intelligent, hip, caring, loving, and a wonderful conversationalist. She was loved enormously, and she will be greatly missed.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Monday, August 7, 2023, at 10:00 am, at Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park, 14321 Comus Rd, Clarksburg, MD 20871. The family will receive friends and relatives at the residence of Markita and Johnny Walker following the funeral from 12 noon to 6:00 pm on Monday, August 7, 2023, 6012 Misty Arch Run, Columbia, MD 21044. The family will again receive friends and relatives at Flora’s former residence at Bedford Court Senior Living from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, 3701 International Drive, Apt 230, Silver Spring, MD 20906. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a charitable organization, including some of Flora’s favorites. Flora gave generously to public broadcasting, the American Jewish World Service, Feeding America, Mercy Corps, the National Jewish Medical and Research Center, and St. Jude’s, among others.
