Dr. George Ruby passed away on May 18th, 2024, at his home in Bethesda, MD. He was 84. He is survived by his wife of 47 years Judith Levy; sister, Natalie Ruby; two children, Elizabeth Ruby and Daniel Ruby; their spouses, Josh Grewal and Laura Allen, respectively; and three grandchildren, Sebastian, Norah, and Ella.
George was born on July 15th, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating as valedictorian from his high school, George attended the University of Chicago and later transferred to the University of California, Berkley to finish his undergraduate studies. George attended medical school at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, completed training rotations in San Francisco, Houston, and Denver, and served in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service during the Vietnam War. Later, George taught at the University of Michigan Medical School, where he met Judith.
George and Judith eventually settled in Bethesda with their family, to whom George was particularly devoted. George’s little spare time was spent studying and tracking the financial markets and following U.S politics. His understanding of and disillusionment with those systems, combined with his physical characteristics, led to his family frequently comparing him to Bernie Sanders. He was also an avid Francophile.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Nature Conservancy and the Southern Poverty Law Center.
A graveside service & final resting place for George will be held Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park, 14321 Comus Road, Clarksburg, Maryland 20871, followed by a graveside service from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM.
