Gerald (Gerry) Hayes, age 71, passed away on September 9, 2018. He was born in White Salmon, WA, on July 8, 1947 to Erwin (Hal) and Eleanora (Nori) Hayes. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Gerry lived and attended school in Italy for many years, finally returning to the United States in 1963 where he attended and graduated from Lakes High School in Lakewood, WA, in 1965. He attended the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, from 1965 until he graduated in 1970. While at UW he was a member of ROTC, and upon graduation was commissioned into the US Army as a Second Lieutenant. He served in the Army until 1972, when he was honorably discharged as a First Lieutenant.
Immediately following his military service, Gerry went to work for several agencies of the Federal Government in the Washington, DC, area, until settling in at the Civil Service Commission, later the Office of Personnel Management, where he met his wife, Michele (Mondor) Hayes. Gerry retired from Federal service in January of 2011 after working over 41 years.
Gerry and Michele were married on April 25, 1981 and lived in Silver Spring, MD, for many years. They have three beloved children, Lawrence, Jennifer and Christopher, and one beloved daughter-in-law, Patty (Gray) Hayes.
Following Michele’s retirement later in 2011 they took an ocean cruise and discovered a new hobby. They have traveled all over the world, including Europe, the Caribbean, South America, and Australia. This became Gerry’s passion and preceding his death they had just completed their final 23 days of cruising together.
Gerry is survived by his wife, Michele, his children, Lawrence, Jennifer and Christopher, daughter-in-law Patty, sister Paola (Hayes) Rutledge, mother-in-law Beneva Mondor, brothers- and sisters-in-law Ray Rutledge, Christine (Mondor) and Steve Feher, Ray Mondor, Marguerite (Mondor) and Tom Noga, Paul and Marion Mondor, Mark Mondor and Joyce McNemar, Karen (Mondor) Schlueter, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
