Gita B. Funston, of Bluefield, WV and Washington, DC, died on August 23, 2022. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Fannie and Maurice Brauer. She was the loving wife of Rabbi Stanley R. Funston for over 60 years, and the amazing mother of Lori Ann Greenberg of Ypsilanti, MI, Robin Sue Funston of Washington, DC, and Terry Lyn Funston of DeKalb, IL. She had two wonderful grandchildren Ronit A. Ajlen (Aaron) of Ypsilanti and Gil M. Greenberg (Eliana) of New York, and one adorable great granddaughter, Dalya Ajlen, also of Ypsilanti.
Throughout her life, Gita was an artist, working in multiple media, always creative, inquisitive, and growing. Her decorations added beauty and meaning to temple functions and holidays. Her art ranged from whimsical sketches, to large poignant paintings, to sculptures in ceramics or paper. She loved flowers and gardens, and she had the uncanny ability to make everything she touched more beautiful.
She was an outstanding baker, who showed her love through a tray of cookies, a batch of brownies, a zucchini bread, or her infamous coffeecake.
She loved to travel and learn about different cultures, their history and art. She traveled the world on cruise ships with her husband, from Europe, to South America, to Asia, and to Africa. When asked what her favorite place was, she could never answer with one place, but listed the many beautiful and interesting places she had seen.
Gita will be missed greatly by all who knew her, and we, her family, will especially miss her smile, giggles, wit, and the touch of her hand. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her memory to the charity of your choice. Private Services were held.
