Born in Osaka, Japan, Jackson spent his early years in Shanghai before immigrating to the U.S. in 1948. He earned his B.S., M.A. in Mathematics, and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, then remained for 38 years as a professor, founding and leading the Robotics and Structural Dynamics Laboratory. He also served as a visiting professor at Stanford, Northwestern, and Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland, and as a Fulbright Professor at National Taiwan University, where he met the love of his life, Ming, in 1967. In 1973, Jackson founded Advanced Technology & Research Corporation (ATR), delivering cutting-edge engineering for government and commercial clients.
He was a member of Good News Ministry, where the care and fellowship of the community deeply moved him to become baptized. He joined the Ching Yun Society with Ming, where they sang and shared a love of music together. He also kept up his lifelong passion for tennis, playing regularly well into his 80s.
Jackson is survived by his wife, Ming, his four children—Angie, Jo Ann, Jason, and Ken—and three grandchildren--Kai, Sophie Ann, and Ella Grace. Jackson is also survived by his brother, George Yang.
